Commercial Description:
Similar to a beer brewed in China some 9,000 years ago, Chateau Jiahu used a recipe that included rice, honey, and grape and hawthorn fruits. The formula was obtained from archaeologists who derived it from the residues of pottery jars found in the late Stone Age village of Jiahu in northern China. The residues are the earliest direct evidence of brewed beverages in ancient China.

750 ml. bottle courtesy of Steve E. Yellow gold pour with lots of floaties, foamy, quickly dissipating white head, and littel lace. Floral, fruity, and vinous nose, some od aroma that I can’t really identify. Light body and carboantion, and an unexpected stickiness. Sweet without any bitterness to speak of. Unusual to say the least. Seems that with DFH it’s either or home run or a strikeout, and I’m afraid that his is the latter.

Compliments of Steve, pours from 750 ml bottle a murky, cloudy yellow-orange with a small white head. Aroma’s sweet and yeasty along with honey, fruit (grapes) and light spices. Flavour of honey foremost followed by various fruit (grapes, citrus and more), caramel malt and some spices -- it’s difficult to describe, like mead meets white wine? An OK beer, but very odd.

Pours a cloudy orange-gold with a short-lived white head. Odd sweet aroma, kumquats, maraschino cherry, candied citrus peel and cantaloupe. Wheaty and sweet with notes of citrus, a bit watery, orange juice (with pulp) mimosa, light spice. Creamy chewy body with good carbonation. Excellent! Well executed and engaging.

Bottle from 08/29/2006. Fine floral honey aroma. Hazy golden orange color with a small amount of foam around the edge. Couple of solid floaters in there. Moderately sweet beginning with a tart finish. Dry palate in the end.

Bottle. Poured honey-amber with a bubbly white head. Aroma was carbonation, honey, vinous, european hops (golding maybe), caramel, and slightly licorice. Flavor was mellifluous licorice, vinous, berries, and caramel. Palate was creamy and very warming. Unfortunately the carbonation aroma was reminiscent of Natty lite, but it was an otherwise decent brew.

Shared with the boys for Cellar Reduction #3. 2007 bottle Pours hazy amber with wispy white head. Aroma of white grapes and alcohol. Flavor is honey, grapes, sweet malty. Wasn’t offended by this, much better than I was expecting. And props for such an old recipe.

Bottle with Butters and sixfootsix at the 3rd Cellar Reduction. 07 bottle. Pours a white head with a white grape nose and a golden body. Tastes similar with a faint hop presence and something sickly sweet that I cannot place. It is wierd, not what I expected, but I dig it.
