Bit of a metallic flavor that was not unpleasant. I don’t need another, but glad to have tried. greco (41), Zeeland, Michigan, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | May 23, 2009 On tap at the Hopcat in Grand Rapids. Was a dark brown that had a lot of light coming through for a stout. Poured a light head that dissipated quickly. Had a nice woody arouma (like oak) and a little malty but otherwise lacking in the aroma department. It was kind of thin in body and so had little mouthfeel. I got some coffee flavor and that unique woody flavor (chicory I guess). Good beer but not great. I won’t seek it out but if it came to me I wouldn’t pass it up. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 14, 2009 A unique stout indeed. The Mexican coffee notes rise to the forefront in yet another A-OK brew from Dogfish Head. I didn’t find the Chicory Stout to be quite as fulling as others in this style, with the body being a bit more watery than heavier stouts. A good beer nonetheless. Hopeye (39), Oregon, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | May 6, 2009 12 oz bottle courtesy of the Binnys Singles Rack (Orland Park, IL). I’ll be honest.. I had to wiki "Chicory" before I indulged in this bad boy. Little did I know that it was a wild plant, that flowers, that can be used as a coffee substitute. Ok, sounds legit. Pours a very dark pour, almost opaque black, with some brown notes in the body, moderate brownish head that laces, cakes at a decent level. Aromas are creamy sweet, preaching chocolate and cream, light caramel, with some subtle roast and coffee coming in. Smells sweeter than expected, smooth. Initial is medium bodied, a bit chalky, pushing coffee, chocolate, and cream up front. Roast comes into the equation early, bittering appropriately and even preaching a touch of smoke further into the body. Finish is dry and roasted, with coffee and very light chocolate. Caramel comes into the body, but is less involved in the bigger picture. I have never had chicory before, but a dry coffee roast comes in at the back end, likelly being the culprit. It is a bit more chalky and dry than actual coffee. Bitterness on the finish, the roast is largely the aftertaste, with coffee and chicory making it with a touch of dry smoke. Interesting, a good more off-the-path stout. Cheers. Swalden28 (1512), McKinney, Texas, USA
