Commercial Description:
Chicory Stout is a rich, dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. It is brewed with roast barley, crystal malt and oats and hopped just right with Glacier hops. We use fair trade Organic Mexican Coatepec beans roasted to our specifications by Notting Hill Coffee Roastery in Lewes, DE.

big on the coffee aroma, slightly colaish. Poured with a deep, thin-density head, black hue and a thin body. taste is of coffee and bitter, but the palate is rich and creamy like a smooth espresso.

12 ounce bottle. mostly opaque, with only hints of orange at the edges of the glass. a tight head with a fine bead rises to a moderate height before receding into a thin sandy cap. light coffee and licorice root appear on the nose, along with some molasses, and graham cracker. smooth full body finish quickly and intensely dry. finish is quick and the flavors of coffee, bitter chocolate, and herbs don’t linger around. this is a good dry stout, but it is just ok by my account.

Pours black with light tan head. Burnt malt and coffee aromas. Roasted malt flavor with a little sweetness and some coffee. Full body with minimal carbonation. The oats give it a nice creamy mouthfeel.

Reviewed 12/21/2008 (bottle): Pours an inky black body, brown tan head, average and diminishing. Aroma of coffee and semi-bitter chocolate. Heavy dark roasted aroma. Very strong coffee scent. Sweet chocolate taste. More sweet than bittersweet. Medium creamy palate. Some coffee taste. Pretty good.

Pours an opaque very near black with a medium thick sudsy beige froth on top. Fantastic fresh ground coffee aroma, a lighter robust roast that is a nice departure from the typical near burnt bitter coffee aroma, really smells like that morning coffee smell in the terminals of airports, a bit woody, but lighter woods, like a tongue-depressor, some sugar and cream as well. Flavor follows aroma, sweetened coffee and cream, soft woodiness, popsicle-stick, finishing brighter, lightly fruity, soft lightly roasted bitter coffee, bees-wax, honey-dew. I really like this botanical softer roast take. Medium body, fuller mouthful, soft and fluffy, airy carbonation, not sticky, dry feeling.

On tap at Bodega. Pitch black with a medium beige head. Complex aroma of coffee, hop, malt, licorice and bread. Coffee and chocolate flavors with some hop and booze. Flavor is good, but there is not a lot of flavor there. Tastes a bit watered down.

Not thrilling but nothing overtly wrong with the beer either. Nice color and carbonation level. Some might think the carbonation is too much for a stout, but because of this it tasted great for at least two days after opening. Still the beer didn’t have the greatest mouthfeel and just seemed to be lacking a touch. Still pretty good. Worth trying.
