Commercial Description:
Chicory Stout is a rich, dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. It is brewed with roast barley, crystal malt and oats and hopped just right with Glacier hops. Very dark brown color, almost black, medium sized head that doesn’t last. Aroma is malts, vanilla, some smoke but it’s very mild. Sweet tasting, some roasty malt, caramel, coffee, perhaps some smoky wood, light bitterness, but this is very thin and finishes empty. Sweet and lacking some punch... seems to be a common trend with Dogfish Head. I admit the bottle was a little old so maybe it deserves another try.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black color with a brown, medium-sized head. Aromas of coffee, licorice, roasted malts, and hints of chicory. Creamy start with an oily finish for texture, smooth with just the right amount of carbonation. Wonderful taste from start to finish - highly recommended!

12 oz bottle from 2007. Poured ~1yr after purchase. I never got around to drinking this beer when I split a six pack with some friends. Upon pouring, developed a nice head. Put my nose over the glass and had to retreat - aroma was very displeasing. First sip - the flavor of a thin stout was overpowered by a strong metallic taste. After a couple more sips, I declared it undrinkable and determined to pour it out. Over the next hour before I discarded it, there was a nice roasted coffee aroma in the air. I couldn’t muster the courage to taste it again.

Dark brown pour with a very prominent woody flavor topped off with chocolate and a lot of licorice. Very nice roasted finish to it as well, damn solid beer.

12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Black with lasting ring. Roasted woodsy chocolate coffee aroma. Roasted chocolate fruity fig with a hint of licorice and medium oat tang. Slightly watery body. Fairly complex with a lot of intermingled flavors, none of which calls out, ’’Here is an excellent stout!’’

deep black in color. Very dark coffee colored head on top. Smells of roasted grains, coffee & a slightly herbal note. Very drinkable, and not heavy at all. flavor has a licorice note along with coffee. Well done, but not my favorite. Too dry.

Had this on tap at the brewpub in Rehoboth. It is roast, chocolatey goodness. Great balance and very complex.
