Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, oak and some espresso notes. Flavor is sweet with some dark fruit, chocolate and maybe a hint of molasses. Interesting beer, but not one of DFH’s best. thenick (746), North Bellmore, New York, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 27, 2008 Bottle. Pours a very deep brown with reddish streaks on the outer edges of the glass and a tan head. Aroma is surprisingly mild for this beer - I detected cocoa, roasted malt, vanilla, and coffee. Taste is chocolate and roasted malt up front, and I also detected oak, vanilla, and slight dark fruit/licorice noticeable on the finish. Smooth throughout and very little alcohol burn. It seemed like a rather by-the-numbers stout, but an enjoyable by-the-numbers stout. I didn’t detect any chicory in here, but then again I’m no coffee drinker so I might have just missed it. changeup45 (797), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Nov 18, 2008 Very dark brown color, almost black, medium sized head that doesn’t last. Aroma is malts, vanilla, some smoke but it’s very mild. Sweet tasting, some roasty malt, caramel, coffee, perhaps some smoky wood, light bitterness, but this is very thin and finishes empty. Sweet and lacking some punch... seems to be a common trend with Dogfish Head. I admit the bottle was a little old so maybe it deserves another try. branspra (225), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 2, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black color with a brown, medium-sized head. Aromas of coffee, licorice, roasted malts, and hints of chicory. Creamy start with an oily finish for texture, smooth with just the right amount of carbonation. Wonderful taste from start to finish - highly recommended! jpiper (6), Cleveland, Ohio, USA does not count | 1.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 2/10 | 2/5 | 4/20 | Oct 24, 2008 12 oz bottle from 2007. Poured ~1yr after purchase. I never got around to drinking this beer when I split a six pack with some friends. Upon pouring, developed a nice head. Put my nose over the glass and had to retreat - aroma was very displeasing. First sip - the flavor of a thin stout was overpowered by a strong metallic taste. After a couple more sips, I declared it undrinkable and determined to pour it out. Over the next hour before I discarded it, there was a nice roasted coffee aroma in the air. I couldn’t muster the courage to taste it again. Beardface (1024), Eugene, Oregon, USA

Very nice roasted finish to it as well, damn solid beer. malrubius (1002), Valley Stream, New York, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Oct 24, 2008 12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Black with lasting ring. Roasted woodsy chocolate coffee aroma. Roasted chocolate fruity fig with a hint of licorice and medium oat tang. Slightly watery body. Fairly complex with a lot of intermingled flavors, none of which calls out, ’’Here is an excellent stout!’’
