Dogfish Head Chicory Stout

Pours a deep, dark burgundy white a not quite bone white head. The smell is kinda light, but has noticeable hints of chocolate, coffee, and anise, with some piny hops. The taste on the other hand explodes with character the coffee is strong, the roast is powerful, the bitter is long and the aftertaste is clean as a freaking whistle. I think this a damn good, often overlooked stout. Easy drinking, inexpensive, yet creative, balanced, adventurous, complex, and, most importantly, enjoyable. A go-to sixer for me.

Bottle. A good stout but one i enjoy less each time i revisit it. Lots of coffee almost acidic but not in the sour sense. Guess thats just DFH with their big hops.

12oz bottle. pours black with tan head. aroma of chicory, chocolate, coffee, roast. flavor has a citrus acidity to it which i find rather off puting, some coffee roast and licorice on the back end. rather fizzy mouth feel.

Bottle. Pours jet black with a two finger tan head and good lacing. Light smoky malt aroma with roasted coffee and some chocolate notes. Flavor is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, smoked wood and a hint of vanilla. medium body with a dry finish Decent stout

pours jet black with a tan head that has a lot of staying power. aroma is very upfront with lots of coffee, but not in dry bitter way. the same goes for the flavor roasty and deep, but almost in a sweet stout sense. really nice flavor licorice, tobacco as well. thick full mouthfeel. This is a really delicious stout.

12 oz bottle courtesy of SoLan. Pours an almost opaque black color with a medium tan head that slowly recedes. The aroma is ripe with coffee, dark chocolate and dates. The flavor is subdued compared to the aroma, there is coffee, nuts, colas and acidic biter hops. The mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side. The finish is long and dry with lingering biter dark chocolate and a bit of smoke. Overall: A very unusual stout, one that grows on you as you drink it. Recommended.

Dark brown, with nutty head. Mouthfeel is smooth on the palate with a good taste of roasted chicory and chocolate. Aroma is quite subtle with a slight taste of hop. Light carbonation. A great stout, light in coffee flavor compared to some others. A gerat addition to the Dogfish Head line.

Bottle. Fizzy dark brown. Cola looks and aromas. Some ginger, some chalk. Mouthfeel is thin, soft, and less fizzy than it looks, yet thinner than it should be! Boring, a bit of a chore to get through. Like watered-down chicory tea. Needs a boost of roasted malt and hops; needs more heavy duty roasted chicory root. Needs beef. Profoundly disappointing, a DFH underachievement!
