Flavor is roasty as hell with loads of coffee and hints of cocoa powder. Slight herbal notes along with some light cola but mostly powdered chocolate and coffee. A smooth and kind of powdery mouthfeel with medium body. Interesting carbonation, comes in late in the game. Finish is dry and long. Good flavors, I don’t see anything wrong with this one however I doubt I’ll get anymore. gwpom (253), Akron, New York, USA

With Dog Head’s reputation for quality brew, I was a bit disappointed with this. I’m a huge stout lover and this seemed a bit average to me. Small brown head, a bit of a smokey flavor but nothing that really distinguished it from other higher end stouts. I did get a sixer and maybe I’ll read more into it with further drinking. Smells of coffee, malts and smoky wood. Heavy beer, tastes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, an earthy wood or bark tinge and some hops and malts. It finishes dry with little sweetness, almost bitter. It’s complex and well-made, but perhaps a bit too dry for my tastes. jlf278 (255), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Feb 22, 2008 For some reason I couldn’t help feeling an overwhelming root beer sensation when I started drinking this. As I progressed, it went away, yielding coffee and other standard stout flavors. This beer reminded me in some ways of a porter as well, being on the dry side for a stout. I appreciated the foamy lacing of the head and the faint tree bark aroma. Overall, I found this beer interesting, but not deserving of a repeat purchase. ElGaucho56 (393), USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 20, 2008 Pours a near jet-black with thin khaki head and spotty lacing. Earthy, smoked wood nose with faint hints of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Medium-bodied, pretty drinkable, with very little sweetness, mostly roasted malts, more coffee, and a very sharp dry finish, above which sits a slight minty hop bitterness. A nice stout, but probably not one I’ll revisit. SturmWulf (65), USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Feb 17, 2008 Pleasant aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, hint of molasses, coffee, caramel and light smoke. Poured into the Pint very dark. A beautiful frothy, foamy tan head that lasted long and left good lacing. Flavor of coffee, molasses, light touch of chocolate, roasted malt and a hint of smoke. more coffee and more coffee.. Medium to full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, and mildly long bitter finish. A very good beer by Dogfish. I like this stout very much. Its only problem is this good brew doesnt seem to mesh the flavors well. Overpowered by the coffee so you only get very faint hints of the other flavors. The coffee is not obnoxious, just always there overpowering the other flavors. However, it is a fine beer and well worth having one. I would not hesitate to have another sometime. CP (124), USA

Quite different from other stouts. Hints of coffee, caramel, Mexican beans and a bit of smoke. Could be a good session beer. I want more.
