Commercial Description:
Chicory Stout is a rich, dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. It is brewed with roast barley, crystal malt and oats and hopped just right with Glacier hops. We use fair trade Organic Mexican Coatepec beans roasted to our specifications by Notting Hill Coffee Roastery in Lewes, DE.

This was a good stout. Pour was a nice deep dark brown with a 1 finger tan head. Aroma was so so. Roasted malt and that’s about it. Taste was roasted malt, coffee, and smoke. Slightly bitter aftertaste. A nice solid stout.

Nice aroma: roasty, a little alcoholic, some hops. Flavor and aroma stand in great disparity. The body/palate is thin. Starts out a tad malty and roasty and then bowls you over with this odd tartness that I do not find appealing. Not my style obviously.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a small tan head. The aroma was roasty, lightly smoky and malty. The flavor was lightly bitter and roasty with noticable chicory and a strange blending of flavors I could not quite identify yet found vaguely nauseating. Definitely not my style.

Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of toasted, almost burnt, and mild coffee and dark chocolate. Light perfume for the hops and dough for the yeast with soy sauce, brown sugar and black rum in the background. No head from my pour, maybe my fault. Color is black with a red hue when bright light passes through it. Flavor starts lightly sweet and acidic then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, between dry and watery with lively carbonation and a moderately astringent finish. Good, but a bit more sweetness and this would be an awesome stout.

12oz bottle. Dark brown color. Roasty malt flavors and some coffee. Flavor contains lots of roasted coffee flavors. Finish has an odd herbal taste, perhaps the Chicory.

(Bottle) Pours a dark brown color with a small fizzy head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and spice. Taste is similar, with coffee being one of the main players. Burnt toffee and some cream as well. Average palate and low carbonation. Pretty good, but I don’t think the chicory really meshed with this beer very well.
