Commercial Description:
Chicory Stout is a rich, dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. It is brewed with roast barley, crystal malt and oats and hopped just right with Glacier hops. We use fair trade Organic Mexican Coatepec beans roasted to our specifications by Notting Hill Coffee Roastery in Lewes, DE.

I put the tasting of this off for a while but then I found it at Vintage Estates in Boardman for $1.5 in a 12 oz brown bottle. I think DFH is approaching cheapdark standards. As good as Bell’s Kalamazoo and Sierra Nevada Stout, but not as good as Yards Love Stout. Very opaque dark but not thick or syrupy appearing. Interesting initial flavor that reminds me of chocolate flavored wet rope. Like nothing I’ve tased before the other beers that I can recall. Spice seems to quell an ever present background bitterness. Smooth and mellow palate that is not offensive though possessess burned tree bark flavors. As mild as many sweet stouts I’ve taseted. Decent carbonation for a stout. Cold coffeelike. Nice description on the front of the bottle. Friendly at first and then gets just a little ornery.

Rated 11/22/06: Not all it’s cracked up to be, but still a relatively average stout. The aroma is bitter and has a decent note of roasted malts nothing out of the ordinary. Good initial pour very dark brown with a large head that quickly dwindles and leaves virtually no lacing. Not very full especially for a stout the thinness in the mouthfeel is a real let down. Flavor is relatively standard some strong coffee notes really come through. Other than that this is pretty basic for a stout. Glad I didn’t sink $10 into getting the entire sixer.

Bottle. Pours black with a small frothy light brown head. There is little to no lacing but the head sticks around the whole time. The aroma is of coffee and some burbon. Takeing the first drink it is quite malty with a good hop bitterness. The coffee is very well ballanced with the roasted malt. Along with citrusy hops. The budy is medium to full with a very creamy texture and soft carbonation. I like this one alot, the coffee does not overpower it like alot of the beers with coffee in them do. This is a very well balanced one.

A nice stout. Usually pick up a case of it when I am in the Delware shores. A nice coffee flavor.

pours black with a huge three finger bubbly brown head. aroma is chicory, roasted malt, and dark chocolate. has a medium body with ok lacing and good carbonation. flavor is chicory, roasted malt, and has a smoke, coffee, and dark chocolate flavor. has a somewhat bubbly, oily, dry mouth feel to it. pretty good somewhat thin and bubbly for a stout, almost a huge porter. also has sediment in the glass and aroma does get better as it warms.

Bottle. Black color and aroma of coffee. Very strong almost bitter taste. Smoke and coffee flavor. Goes down very smoothly with a finish of coffee.

Had this at the Dogfish Head Ale house in MD, but only as part of a black and tan (this & 90 min). The B&T was awesome, and poured well, so I feel I can comment on the stout. Hard to judge the head, but had a smooth mouth feel and great balanced, smokey-coffee taste.
