| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 2, 2009 Pours nearly black with a thin head. Aroma of roasted malts and bitter coffee. Similar flavor - lots of strong coffee without being overpowering. I found the palate to be a little lighter than I was expecting, but still very drinkable. I would definitely reach for this beer again if given the chance. bblack99 (205), Kansas City, Missouri, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Oct 28, 2009 Bottle from Total Wine in Ft. Myers. Such an odd beer experience, but I guess that’s to be expected with DFH brews!
Pours like you’d expect a stout to pour, black with a motor oil consistency and a quickly-thinning pillowy tan head that left nothing in the way of lace.
Smells like mexican coffee (from the chicory) and little else. Flavor is dominated by the chicory (which tastes just like coffee) and licorice. My amateur palate has no idea what St. John’s Wort tastes like, so I definitely couldn’t pick it out.
Medium-weight with an intriguing finish. Not a beer I’d pay that much for to try again, but worth a shot once! joebudzjoe (228), Connecticut, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 15, 2009 Draft @ Monster B’s. Like most good stouts, this beer had a wonderful marshmellowy soft white head. The added ingredients in this beer are too unnoticeable to differentiate this beer from the pack. Solid, but unspectacular; and when I drink Dogfish Head, I expect spectacular. checkmatei1 (630), Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 14, 2009 Draft: Poured a dark reddish brown and no head. The aroma was coffee, chicory, and toasted nuts. The flavor was roasted coffee, nuts, and birch. Overall, an easy drinking stout I’d definitely drink again. | 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 12, 2009 Pours a deep black with hints of ruby on the edge of the glass as the light hits. The beer has a nice head and keeps good lace. The aroma is coffee with some toasty notes, simple but appetizing. The flavor is bitter coffee, some burnt toast and some dark chocolate, once again simple but delicious. petematte46 (225), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 3, 2009 Pours black with no head. Coffee aroma and flavor. Light body and thin mouth feel. Pretty solid DeadGirl (242), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Aug 31, 2009 Updated: Oct 18, 2009Pour from the 12oz. bottle into a glass: Aroma is of pure bark. Tastes of chicory (never tasted chicory before but ok I cheated and looked at the description...is it a legume? What the hell is a legume?), bark, roasted dry coffee beans, spices, malts, and toasted mother earth throughout. Drinkability: yeah- it’s different, like a burnt stout. Rebuy: with all Dogfish Heads, my answer is always yes. It’s the most consistent brewery I know. #104 on 31082009, DG.
