Commercial Description:
Chicory Stout is a rich, dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. It is brewed with roast barley, crystal malt and oats and hopped just right with Glacier hops. We use fair trade Organic Mexican Coatepec beans roasted to our specifications by Notting Hill Coffee Roastery in Lewes, DE.

Not overly impressed by this offering from the amazing Dogfish Head. It was a tad thin, lifeless and lacked flavor. The pour was dark brown with aromas of roasted coffee and roasted malts. The flavor was decent with a nice roasted malt flavor and some coffee.

Pours brown black with a thin tan head and some lace. Aromas of a New Orleans Cafe Au Lait as well as a bit of licorice. The finish is absolutely coffee and chicory--it’s the getting there that is a bit odd. The taste is almost medicinal at first before transitioning to the bitter bite of chicory and chocolate. Enjoyable.

Aroma of licorice, maple syrup and trace coffee. Appearance is black with a mocha head. Flavor is mostly licorice and medium coffee finish. There were also some really earthy undertones that made this stout stand out from others. Palate was bubbly and smooth. A misunderstood brew from a brewery that is used to being misunderstood.

Sweet molasses aroma. Malt & coffee. Strong coffee flavor. Tastes like iced coffee, or Postum - does anybody still drink Postum? That might have chicory in it. Fairly dry and medium bodied. A solid brew, not the best from adventurous Dogfish Head.

19th June 2008. Seems more like a porter than a stout to me. Very slight sweet note (from the chicory?). Mildly bitter coffee. Effervescent minerally finish. Good but was expecting something different or more unusual from this cutting edge brewery.

Black color with a thin tan head. This is a good, pleasant stout. It’s not complex or anything, just good clean flavor with a nice smokey undertone. Very well balanced and smooth flavor. Average mouthfeel. I like it.

Tap at FFF. Pours midnight black with brown edge and 2 finger tan head. Dark roasted malts and coffee with some chocolate. Smooth and well blended flavors. Decent.

Syrupy black pour, tiny beige head. Nice roasted barley and coffee in the aroma, some chocolate as well. Medium mouth feel, very mild, ashy flavor with some light coffee notes and some molasses. Subtle and rather nice.
