Commercial Description:
Chicory Stout is a rich, dark beer made with a touch of roasted chicory, organic Mexican coffee, St. John's Wort, and licorice root. It is brewed with roast barley, crystal malt and oats and hopped just right with Glacier hops. We use fair trade Organic Mexican Coatepec beans roasted to our specifications by Notting Hill Coffee Roastery in Lewes, DE.

Pours a blackish brown into the glass with a brown head. Aroma is rich and chocolaty with some spice. Flavor is rich with coffee and chocolate notes.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma of coffee beans, roasted malt, and roasted nuts. Flavor of peanut butter and sweet malt. Sweetness in the finish. The sweetness, at least for me, keeps this from being a great beer, but it’s still pretty darn good!

Bottle, bottled 11/4/08. Aroma of bitter, roasted coffee, espresso, roasted malt. Flavor again emphasizes those wonderful bitter coffee and espresso tones, and I think the bitterness is really helped along by the chicory, though I’m not terribly familiar with chicory, so I can’t say for sure. In any case, a superb bitterness and a superb coffee edge make for a very nicel stout here.

Pour is a dark brown with a tight tan head. Dry roasted coffee and chocolate are prominent. Easy drinking stout.

1000 ratings for this beer. Bottle. Very dark brown. Nice tan head. Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, oak and some espresso notes. Flavor is sweet with some dark fruit, chocolate and maybe a hint of molasses. Interesting beer, but not one of DFH’s best.

Bottle. Pours a very deep brown with reddish streaks on the outer edges of the glass and a tan head. Aroma is surprisingly mild for this beer - I detected cocoa, roasted malt, vanilla, and coffee. Taste is chocolate and roasted malt up front, and I also detected oak, vanilla, and slight dark fruit/licorice noticeable on the finish. Smooth throughout and very little alcohol burn. It seemed like a rather by-the-numbers stout, but an enjoyable by-the-numbers stout. I didn’t detect any chicory in here, but then again I’m no coffee drinker so I might have just missed it.
