Pours like you’d expect a stout to pour, black with a motor oil consistency and a quickly-thinning pillowy tan head that left nothing in the way of lace.
Smells like mexican coffee (from the chicory) and little else. Flavor is dominated by the chicory (which tastes just like coffee) and licorice. My amateur palate has no idea what St. John’s Wort tastes like, so I definitely couldn’t pick it out.
Medium-weight with an intriguing finish. Not a beer I’d pay that much for to try again, but worth a shot once!

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 9, 2009 12oz bottle into an English pint glass (2009). A straight pour reveals a huge tan head floating a top a black beer with light showing through the edges. The aroma is a lot of stout - roasted barley, chocolates, coffee, and a hint of smokiness. The flavor is nice creamy chocolate with coffee in the background and a nice stout sourness lingering in the back. This is capped with a touch of smokiness but it’s blended well with the roasted malts, etc. It’s a bit watery, though - kinda thin in flavor and body. FlyingSwine (170), Littleton, Colorado, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 8, 2009 Pours a dark brown, almost black, with a thick tan head. Plenty of lace. Aroma consists of wood, coffee, and a bit of caramel. Flavor has some burnt wood, caramel and roasty, with a very light touch of alcohol. Medium bodied and creamy, with a touch of carbonation. Overall an interesting beer, but I’ve had better from Dogfish Head. dkingsella (91), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 7, 2009 Tasted at the ’09 Portland Holiday Ale Fest. Was disappointed in this one. I was expecting more based on the reputation of Dogfish Head and my own enjoyment of the 90 minute IPA. Poured dark black with lots of foamy head (in fairness, I think this may have had something to do with the keg...they seemed to be having some issues). Mouthfeel was thin and flat despite all the bubbles that were initially in my glass. There was a distinctive toasty, roasty, coffee and nut flavor in both the aroma and flavor, but not much beyond that. Just not a very complex beer. potbeercollege (375), Boulder, Colorado, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 6, 2009 Bottled. Brownish black with medium tan head. Aroma is slightly sweet and is of burnt chocolate and roasted coffee with notes of molasses. Taste is also slightly sweet and has heavier notes of the burnt chocolate and light molasses sweetness. Nice roasted-burnt taste in the finish. Damico (174), Norristown, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 5, 2009 With a coffee and roasted malty aroma, this stout pours dark with a full creamy dark head. The coffee flavor is subtle with a pure rich roasted flavor so smooth on the palate. zizzybalubba (376), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 5, 2009 12 oz. bottle from Grape & Gourmet (bottled Nov. 9, 2009). Pours black with a rich, creamy tan head. Big roasted coffee aroma. Roasted malt, a hint of smoke, black coffee, and bitter chocolate are the main flavors. This is a very good stout. emerica56 (582), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 5, 2009 Pours a thick tan head and it floats on the top of the beer, color is jet black and non transparent. The nose is woody blended with, floral resin hops. As you sip on it you can really taste the coffee, hints of mocha, chocolate malt, and the wood used in flavoring this beer. Hops are present but moth feel is overwhelmed by coffee and chicory. Overall it has good carbonation, mouth feel, and aroma. It is a full bodied refreshing stout. RickTStiles (40), New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 4, 2009 Pours black with nice tan head and some decent lacing. Aroma is is toffee and brown sugar with something else that I just can’t seem to put my finger on. Goes down incredibly smooth with burnt coffee taste ans even some sauteed fruit. Finishes big and sweet. Unique and wonderful stout and yet another outstanding beer from Dogfish Head.
