DandyWolfFloyd (331), Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA May 28, 2008 The aroma is definitely tart fruit, with peach, pear, and others filling in. It’s rather golden in color with a thin white collar head. It’s sour for sure, with notes of peach, but more so a cidery flavor. It’s clean and biting. A rather tart beverage perfect for a dinner. MrChopin (621), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 27, 2008 Updated: Mar 6, 2009Thanks to durhambeer for the bottle! I have had this several times, and my reaction has been pretty consistent. Tepid, almost transparent cloudy-gold with white head that fizzles out after a few seconds. Scent is tart peach, lemon, slightly grainy, a very minor contribution from the standard wheat and lactic elements. Very tart and sour with lots of lemon in the flavor, the peach coming back in the aftertaste. Very light and thin, but the finish is really short, gone almost instantly. This tastes almost synthetic compared to the other Berliner Weisses I’ve had, trading the complexity of the robust, lively wheat notes and lactic warmth for something bracing yet singularly sour, the best quality being the refreshment. It’s still decent, but it’s not the real deal. gueuzeisgod (109), Graham, North Carolina, USA May 27, 2008 Bottle, fully chilled. Pours with very little carbonation, poured vigorously and had a hard time creating any froth at all. Smells chalky and acidic- both lactic and ascorbic. Tastes of medium acidity- of course I am used to geuze so this may seem puckering to some people- very attenuated body, thin, lemon zesty, lightly bready. Very quenching and delicious. Closely follows the Berliner Weisse style. The peach is subdued, which is nice in this beer to keep it background- finesses the overall flavor. I like lambics though and having a fully fruited lambic style version of this would be nice too- but only if staying far away from the cloying sweetness that some lambics have. Very nice job for an american brewery- I just wish there were a place on this continent with naturally occurring yeast and bacteria like in the senne valley so that we could create even more dynamic lambics and sours here. Ungstrup (14754), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 25, 2008 Bottled. A hazy light golden beer with a rim of beige head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of peaches. The flavor is both sweet and acidic, the acidity draws some mouthwater, combined with strong notes of peaces, leading to a dry tart finish. Pwn3d (1040), Manhattan, New York, USA May 25, 2008 Updated: Jul 15, 2009bottled. A very tart brew thats also very interesting. Sour lemon, grape and peach flavors and sparkling carbonation. Almost has a wine cooler feel to it combined with a weiss beer. Berliner Weisse are 2 for 2 with me.. very good, just wish they were easier to get ahold of. Second time I had this it was a bit less enjoyable notably too tart and sour -.3 santos999 (318), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 24, 2008 Bottled 05/31/07. In the glass it is a sparkling gold with lots of fast moving carbonation and a bubbly white head. In the nose it’s incredibly funky. Moldy cheese, earthy mushrooms, fruitiness, barnyard notes, and a host of other complexities I can’t begin to describe. In the mouth, it’s bubbly and effervescent, with clean, lemony acidity and tart citric undertones. The funkiness is intense!! The peach is all but gone, and I’m glad. Intensely dry and mouth-puckering sour finish. After a year, this has done what I hoped - became more acidic. Another year or two, and I’ll be able to convince you that you’re drinking Gueuze! Funky, funky, funky. I love wild yeast. Hank1980 (734), Athens, Georgia, USA May 23, 2008 Pours a cloudy orange with a light diminishing head. Aroma is of tart fruit, peach, light hops. Taste is a little sweet, though pretty sour as well. A little like a pinot or dry white wine. Mouth is relatively light with moderate carbonation. Plenty of dry sourness in the finish. Pretty unique. Davinci (295), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 23, 2008 Hazy pale peach color, very hazy with a thin white head. Aroma is beautifully tart and refreshing, slight hints of funk, white grapes, and the peach. Flavor is jaw clenchingly tart. Mostly a lemony white grape juice type of flavor with the peaches just poking their head out toward the end of the sip. I think it’s great that DFH did this, I think we need more representation of this style (only 16 berliner weisses in the database, 10 brewers total). This is very quenching and easy to drink.
