This one didn’t seem to suffer any effects, as if featured a crisp, fresh lemony citric hoppy nose. Well done. The flavor was quite sweet, with huge sticky, toffeeish candy malts. A bit corny, or at least grainy/sugary. A little sticky and heavy on the palate. Perhaps just enough bittering hops to balance, but not quite enough to taste alot of bitterness, which is disappointing for a beer considering itself to be some sort of relative to a pilsner. Dark golden color, big foaming head. nijuro (63), USA

I couldn’t get past the pour...the label coupled with the look of the beer was a litte offputting... BeerVirgin72 (814), Pataskala, Ohio, USA

You did GREAT with this one...Its a winner! This beer smelled wonderful! Sweet bread with a hint of citrus, some apple and I think light grapefruit! Poured a very nice golden amber color. Beautiful white head that left gorgeous lacing. This was a perfect picture beer, actually, when its its glass. The taste was great. Sweet malts, bread, some fruit, thick carmel sweetness. Very different then any Pilsener I have had. Since I love a sweet malt, this beer was definitely a good one for me...Ended with just a slightly hoppy finish at the end. haukur (684), Reykjavik, Iceland

I’ve been holding onto this for a couple months and finally decided to crack it open. Poured a darker golden than most pilsners. Of course this is "Imperial". Good amount of fat carbonation bubbles rise up into the big 2 finger feather white pillowy head. This is an extremely good looking beer. Small sticky lacing.
The smell is more subdued than I would have guessed. The main aroma of this beer is raw hardcore grains. There’s a sugary sweetness that I haven’t encountered in other pilsners. There is a mild herbal grassy hoppiness. Somewhat medicinal. Smells ok but nothing special.
Taste is much the same as the smell. Big mouthfull of raw grains. There is a sweet herbal and mild grassy flavor. Throughout the entire drink there’s a sweetness that while not bad doesn’t help the flavor either. After warming that sweetness comes in the form of caramel. Not normal for a pilsner. The flavor has that medicinal flavor as well. A little too cloying for my liking. Not crisp like a pilsner should be, imperial or not. After a little warming this beer comes together a little better. The grains and caramel maltiness still put this beer above average.
The body doesn’t really feel all that heavy but gets sticky mid-palate through the swallow. Viscous. Mild alcohol heat after a little warming. The alcohol helps a little.
Drinkability is so-so. I’m going to drink this whole bottle but that’s all I could or would want to drink. Just a little to sticky and sweet to drink anymore.
Dogfish head makes some really crazy and interesting beers. I love the idea of the Imperial Pilsner and have had a couple different samples in the past but this one falls a little short. If not for the syrupy sticky mouthfeel I belive this would be a quality beer. I hope to see it again in the future with a slightly tweaked recipe that eliminates the sticky sweetness. Besides that it is still a good beer and worth giving a try.

This Imperial Pilsner pours deep golden with a very full and thick head. The extra alchohol and hops gives the aroma some deep carmel notes which transend accross the mouthfeel and finish. Citrus zest dominates the palate and finish! grandet (486), Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA

Big craters with gobs of lace leaving cheesecloth. Brown sugar, light lemon, some skunk. Tastes of carmelized hops and peel, with maple. Dense and chewy, light carb. I sampled this fresh a year ago when i bought the bottle and hops helped the balance a bit. Now just a dusty sweetness.
