Amazing lingering head with wonderful lacing. My most lasting impression was of the body of the beer. Overly oaked to my palate, interesting undertones but didn’t blow me away. I am growing less and less impressed with Dogfish as the years go by. Overly sweet, to my mind.

Dark read pour with no head. Aroma of roasted malts and some smoky flavors with hint of sweetness and fruit.

12oz brown glass pry-top. Bottled in 2009. Appearance: Almost no head, but thin off-white foam quickly fades. Mahogany, reddish brown color. Clear. Nose: Smells sweet, roasted and with some burnt characters. Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with lots of smoky flavors. Somewhat sweet but balanced by burnt sugar notes. Almost like a rich, heavy ale aged in scotch casks, really. Notes: Well made, but not subtle. Pretty aggressive, and will definitely improve with some age, but will go flat.

On draft at WOB. One of the best Barley Wines I have ever had. Pours amber color with thin white head. Aromas of barley and oak. Flavors of rich roasted malts hints of dried fruit and vanilla. Great beer must try for anyone.

Reddish-amber with not much head. Vanilla in the aroma, maybe a little maple too. Malty flavor. Juniper berriies? Maybe a little gin-like flavor. Don’t get much sense of hops, except in slightly bitter aftertaste. High alcohol is well concealed. Very nice beer!

Bottle, one of several excellent things Alaskanwarren sent back from Denver with me. Cheers Brian! Rosy amber pour, just a smattering of tan bubbles. Lovely classic English barleywine nose, leather, sandlewood, almonds. An aroma of distinguished age. All the bells and whistles of peat, berries, etc, don’t really intrude, and instead just build on the pleasant sense of underlying spice. Pleasant nutty fino sherry flavor, earthy leather flavor that initially feels rather dry and delicate, but finishes with a nice honey note. Rather drinkable and very soft alcohol presence. Lovely, subtly crafted beer.

12 oz. bottle from Total Wine (2008 bottle, consumed May 16, 2009). Dark reddish-brown color with a nice white head that quickly fades. Aroma of vanilla, oak, and berries. Very slight cherry-like flavor with dominating flavors of oak, maple, vanilla, and smoke. Slight alcohol burn, as expected, as this one goes down. Certainly not your typical barleywine; this is a totally unique beer. Delcious and complex. Great stuff.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy copper amber with a small creamy light tan head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is a sweet fruit malt with smoke and vanilla. Decent spotty lacing along the glass. Medium mouthfeel with a smooth fruit malt taste with a nice lingering dry finish. HIdes the alcohol very well making it easy to drink with the oak coming throughout. A very good barleywine from Dogfish Head.
