| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 8, 2009 I’ve been sitting on this bottle for over a year. The aroma is malty, grapes, port, just smells delicious. It pours out a clear golden but as the glass fills it is a dark ruby brown. The head is mostly diminishing, just wisps on top. The initial flavor is roasted caramel, maple flavor, some bitter and a hint of alcohol. The body is medium, creamy and very soft carbonation. HopheadHans (755), Bay Area, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Dec 27, 2008 Bottle. Ours with a copper color and a smallish head. Smells mainly of vanilla and toffee. The flavors are very complex: vanilla, oak and maple, and a finish that is best described as cheddar like. Fairly sweet without being cloying, a very complex and interesting beer. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 20, 2008 An amalgam of flavors and spices, this certainly did not taste like a barley wine, more like a Scotch ale. Sweet and full of flavor with the strength masked by the vanilla and maple. Nephilium (557), Ohio, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 9/20 | Dec 18, 2008 Slightly sweet aroma, with hints of alcohol and maple syrup. Pours a clear dark ruby red, with a quickly fading tan head. The head starts strong, then fades to a dusting and a ring around the edge of the glass. Wow, this is not what I was expecting flavor wise. There is a strong smokey flavor, almost bacon like, with some sweetness biting at the edge of it. If there is any alcohol flavor, it is being curbstomped by the smoke flavor. This is not what I was expecting, and I will admit that I am not a fan of smoke in my beers. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 18, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown with a small foamy head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is oakey with lots of maltiness and an alcohol kick. Tastes of a smooth mix of alcohol, light fruitiness and malt. This one was alot smoother than I was expecting from the aroma. The alcohol is very prominent.

One of the best smelling beers ever. Love me the barley wine...this did not disappoint....I think I can honestly say tomorrow will be a Day of Recuperation...where’s the Advil???? ceffalo (38), , Texas, USA

Very complex flavor of maple and vanilla with a slight bitterness, ever so light. taalhiker (179), Dayton, Ohio, USA
