Beware of this one... it packs a punch.
Hazy in appearance, nice delicat head, sweet and balanced with a smoky peaty undertone. Very well made, but very strong. gotohelunc (476), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 18, 2008 Bottle. Hazy, redish brown color, small white head. Nice full boozy nose of bourbon, honey, and hops. Flavors meld that same bourbon character with smoke and vanilla syrup. Finishes with an interesting sharp acidic bite, then a nice warm alcoholic warmth. Good, interesting, strong barleywine. kseecs16 (914), Naperville, Illinois, USA

Rich sweet woody aroma of oak and bourbon. Hints of smoky charred malts. Full sweet flavor with some roast smoke hints bitter lingering after taste, a pleasant heat. Creamy and mouthfilling with some fizzy bite. ewestern (198), Ohio, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 17, 2008 Pour was a nice dark amber color. Sweet aroma that mirrors the taste without letting onto the flavors behind it to much. Quite possible the most complex beer I have had. I finished the first drink and knew that there were flavors I missed in there. Primarily a vanilla maple mixture with hints of other flavors floating around. Enough carbonation to tickle the tongue, the medium body feels smooth throughout. I really enjoyed exploring this beer. Imaena (259), Portland, Maine, USA

Warm Vanilla, forest fruits, plums, wood, carmel, sweet malts, spices (clove). Oily mouthfeel and solid body. Great beer for a winter day. islay (480), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 16, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Consumed on 8-15-2008. Complex, malty, floral aroma features scents of nut (especially Brazil nut, hazelnut, and almond), pitted fruit (especially plum), banana bread, and coffee heavy on the cream and sugar. There is also a wisp of chalky dryness and some chocolate-y, toasted malt effects. Pours a bright, brilliant, brick red. Almost a carmine color. The liquid is mostly clear but displays some haze. Small amount beige head. One of the best colors I’ve ever seen in a beer, but I’d appreciate more head. Tastes much as it smells, with the malts dominating the flavor. Prune, port, chocolate, mocha, hazelnut, clove honey, and milk-chocolate-covered raisin flavors. Virtually no hops presence in the taste. Some coffee dryness in the finish. Prune-y aftertaste. Shockingly light body for a high-alcohol beer (light to medium body overall). Fizzy and oily in the palate. The mouthfeel is quite interesting. Dogfish Head Immort Ale is like a really strong, malty amber or brown ale. This is a good beer, but it is more so a fascinating one. Cletus (5059), Connecticut, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 16, 2008 Pours brown with some traces of white bubbles. Smells boozy with lots of peat character. Tastes earthy and caramelly with some dark fruity hints and a slightly tarte finish. This has a nice complexity to it. JohnQPublic (387), Brooklyn, New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 14, 2008 Bottle into snifter. Pours clear brown with a moderate off-white head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is maple, dark fruit, alcohol, a definite tart berry note from the juniper berries, lesser notes include bourbon, vanilla. Taste is quite complex - sweet but slightly sharp to begin, with a rich, slightly dry sweetness that hints of caramel malt and maple and has definite peaty, smoky note. The smoky peat starts to emerge more, coupled with a big vanilla and rich maple note and a hint of clean, fruity tartness from the berries. The finish is a large dose of the smokey peat that fades away to leave the underlying maple and caramel sweetness sitting on the palate. Mouthfeel is mildly carbonated, with a medium-full body. Delicious beer, one of my favorite barley wines. Perfect balance without using a heavy hop content.
