This beer pushes sweetness about as far as I can handle it, but the complexity makes it quite enjoyable. So much going on! Medium-dark brown pour with beige head. Nose is cotton candy, burnt sugar, malt, peat, slight fruit, a little wood a little vanilla. On the palate, these flavors open up as well as marshmallow, maple, more vanilla, more peat, slight smoke. Only real draw back is that the warming alcohol comes close to a burn a the end. This is a very good beer and a unique barley wine, but the alcohol and price make it a very occasional sipper. Aroma of vanilla, dark fruits, and smoke. Flavor has some complexity, starting off sweet with a combination of vanilla and fruit, with smoke coming through in the middle, descending into an alcohol finish with some bitterness. There’s a lot going on with this beer. Davinci (296), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 29, 2008 Deep amber pour with thinnish off white head. Smokey malts dominate the aroma, some grape/ raisin and alcohol mingle their way into the mix. A mild vanilla aroma apparent as the glass warms. Flavor is smooth and sweet, vanilla and wood, some raisin and smoke, alcohol definately apparent though in a pleasant and balanced way. Some medicinal notes apparent as it warms. Body is full and smooth. Finish is roasty yet clean. Very enjoyable. would love to taste this one aged for a couple years. kappldav123 (1897), Markkleeberg, Germany
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 29, 2008 Thanks to Zinister for the beer! The bottle looks really good, the beer in the glass also. Copper-coloured, malty aroma. Starts malty and strong, a bit alcoholic. Intense finish, a bit scratchy. Very good beer! Merrill (77), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | May 27, 2008 Bottle at home on 5/12/8. Cloudy red with thin head and thin water7y aroma. First sip is a very big conglomeration of citrus - malt - hops with a vanilla undercurrent and sour cherry. The malt mostly masks the strong alcohol - very much a "scotch-ale." A very slight peat flavor also comes through. Interesting spiciness on the sides of your tongue add an additional layer of flavors to this already interesting and delicious (and expensive) beer. Can’t wait to try in on tap. WickerBrew (312), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Way too smoky for my taste. Definetly can sense the 11%, this hits you pretty good. Always like giving the strange Dogfish stuff a try, this among the better ones. joekinty (263), rockledge, Florida, USA

The aroma is very sweet with notes of malt, caramel, alcohol and oak. The flavor is sweet with malt, caramel, vanilla and oak. This is full fo alcohol, however the finish is light enough to allow for heavy drinking!
