I have had this in bottles before but I dont remember it being that smooth. Poured into a snifer, color was a dark amber. Good lacing. There is a ton of flavor in this beer. First a hint of oak, followed by vannilla, smoke, spices and maple. I am not an expert in recogonizing all the ingriedients in beer but you can really taste almost every thing in it. Blended nicely together. Medium texture. Well done DFH. Good beer! greenhorn1 (460), Mission Viejo, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Apr 19, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark murky brown and you can instantly smell the smokey aroma. The flavor is so complex it is hard to even describe. Besides the smokey campfire taste, you can taste the juniper berries. I would never have guessed that until I read the description. Vanilla is present with the addition of oak. Very rich and a thick body. I am going to cellar a bottle for a year or so and try again. I bet this only gets better with age. specksnreds (55), USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 16, 2008 Love the low carbonation and syrupy palate feel. So much going on. Maple syrup, oak, vanilla and alcohol. Uber-complex finish that takes quite an effort to unravel. A delight that ages well. cmillward (434), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Apr 12, 2008 Bottle, with at least a couple of years. Stamp was smudged off, so it goes. Sweet malts, smoke, a little maple hint, vanilla oakiness all on the nose. Vinous and complex with a wonderful long and changing parade of flavors. The smoke is beautiful and not over powering. Hints of hops. Alcohol is well proportioned in relation to the rest of the flavors. Not too heavy in the mouth. This was fantastic. changeup45 (791), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 11, 2008 Updated: Apr 11, 2009Revised 4/17/08. Pours a hazy brown color with a moderate sized head for the style. The aroma is tangy fruits, some hops, alcohol, with some vanilla and spices. Strong, somewhat alcoholic, sweet and tangy fruity flavor with a ton of brown sugars, maple syrup and a touch of wood. A touch too sweet and tangy and this is definitely not a hoppy barleywine. Unique and quite interesting. Re-rate 4/11/09. Bottle aged about a year. Reddish-brown in color with an aroma of oak, cherries, vanilla and plums. Flavor, oak, maple, brown sugar, plums, some spicy hops. Sweet but not cloying. Biggest difference this time is it’s not nearly as hot as I remember. Could be the aging or my recollection. Solid beer. kidmartinek (981), austin, Texas, USA
