Has a deep mahogany body which is slightly hazy capped by a thin, tan head. Aroma is sweet with a soft, smoky note. The taste is thick and malty with accents of smoke and cardamon. Then comes molasses and a balancing hop bitterness. It is much more drinkable than I would have thought for the strength and it hides its alcohol well. An interesting variation on barlewine but a bit too complex for me. markwise (1186), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA

So many flavors hit the palate at once. I can taste some maple syrup, I never taste the vanilla, but it is immensely smoky. It is... different.
Rerate of an 08 bottle. Ages wonderfully, but still noticeable pieces of bandaid and smoke. dkachur (2376), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Light aroma, poured orangish-brown, little head. Taste and mouthfeel are both heavy. Vanilla and maple definitely come through. Light juniper taste right at the beginning. Excellent! efrumtheidiot (190), Maryland, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 29, 2007 pours a ruby amber with an off-white head. i get the vanilla and maple, which gives way to alcohol and some oak. trademark dogfish fruitiness. complex mouthfeel that rounds out with some smokiness. pretty smooth. not bad at all. not my favorite BW though. a little different than other BW’s, might like it for a change of pace if you’re into BW’s. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Sep 24, 2007 Updated: Feb 25, 2009Poured from a bottle. Poured a deep brown color with ruby highlights with a thin, diminshing head. Gottalotta is right on with the smell, aroma of vanilla dominates with some alcohol peaking through. Flavor is wonderfully complex, with the smoky flavor leading into a sweet mishmash of caramel and fruit flavors. Awesome oak finish that leaves a nice aftertaste. I really enjoyed this beer. Re-rated: Flavor not as robust as the last time I had it and not as strong on the oak aftertaste, which is part of the reason I liked it so much in the first place. After having more barleywines this one stands out as different, but not a favorite anymore. gottalottaibu (243), charlotte, North Carolina, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Sep 21, 2007 dark brown/ruby with a low sticky head. big vanilla and alcohol aroma. smoke came out more in the taste than smell. slightly woody and oaky in flavor with caramel and vanilla. not a big fan of smoke in my beers but this was mellow enough to just catch a hint of it for me (not rauch in flavor or aroma to me). not bad. warm alcohol finish and a full lingering mouthfeel. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 2/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 13, 2007 Pours a cleary burgundy color with an inch head into the snifter. The scent was of vanilla, oak, malt and alcohol. There are notes of carmel, vanilla, oak and some smokey malt. There is a smoked, woody taste that finishes the palate. Not a bad barley wine, but a strange aftertaste, very warming. tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA
