Malty wood aroma. Light amber color with no head some white foam. Very strong medicine taste. Light palate for 11% abv.

Bottle. Pours a very murky dark tea color, with a thin ring of white head, with substantial lacing. Roasted malt aromas, smoked oak, caramel and vanilla. Oak flavor, chocolate, currant, smoked malts linger, some nougat and maple syrup. Smooth, easy to drink, and medium-bodied, alcohol is barely noticeable. Impressed.

I cannot detect the peat on the nose because the maple syrup and vanilla are so prevalent. heavy dark amber in the glass, white head had little strength, though a strong presence. the peat certainly comes through in the sip, and there’s a magical complexity of syrup, wood, peat, and aromatic hops. all of these components work together into something really easy on the palate.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a deep caramel color. Looks like real maple syrup. The nose is of oak, smoky peat, caramel and alcohol. This is a fairly high abv beer and the alcohol is not hidden at all. This is a complex brew. The initial few sips taste like cough medicine. Then the beer mellows out and you get flavors of wood, smoked meat, caramel and alcohol.

Pours a dark red tinged brown with a thin thin head that fades quickly to a thin ring. There’s not much in the way of lace, but what is there sticks to the glass pretty well. Smell; very strong oak aromas up front, with a ton of caramel and sugary sweetness in the nose. There’s also an aroma that’s mildly piney, that I have to assume is the juniper berries. But the one thing that seems to dominate it all is a very significant alcohol presence. Taste; whoa...that alcohol may be even stronger in the flavor of this beer than it was in the aroma. It’s actually making it a bit hard to pick out any other flavors. After a little bit I can detect some oak, some caramel & vanilla and some pine, but that alcohol just won’t quit. Did I say this has a bit of an alcohol presence to it yet? Mouthfeel is full bodied and very syrupy/sticky, and with the huge alcohol in this one the drinkability just isn’t there. I’ve been wanting to try this one for a while now, and I’m very disapointed. This one just isn’t for me.

bottle poured into a snifter, chestnut red in color, light ring of lacing on the glass, small bubbles in the glass. smell is oak, burnt wood, loads of malts, the 11% alcohol, sweet maple, and vanilla bean. taste definitely has that burnt wood flavor that i don’t personally care for, dark fruit like plumb, plenty of malts that tame the burnt flavor a bit, some sweetness that i assume comes from the maple syrup, and all in all is a well combined bunch of flavors. I want to like these barley wines and am warming up to them, this is one of the better ones i have tried due to the carbination and the mouth feel not being too thick and medicinal.

A deep reddish amber color with a thin head. This had aroma to give and then some. Tons of malts and spices int he aroma. Loved the flavor deep smoked and balryesqe. The maple and berries added to this made this a great beer. Oak aged also wow this ber gets better every time I drink it. Great stuff.

Bottle. After beer tour Milton DE. Beer was not a favorite of mine. Not a big fan of barley wines and definately did not like the after taste. Reminded me of what a bandaid smells like. Probably will stay away from this beer as there are so many other perfect ones from Dogfish Head.
