This barley wine poured a slightly hazy, deep amber color with a thin beige head that slowly dissolved. Some nice, thick lacing was left behind, but it slowly slide down the sides of the glass due to some oily legs. The aroma consisted of maple syrup, juniper, rock candy, a hint of caramel, and some sweet malts. I could smell the juniper berries from about two feet away. Almost overpowering. The flavor was heavy on the maple syrup. Almost buttery creamy. Nice. You could also taste some vanilla notes, and a bit of candy sugar. There was also a subltle smokiness showing up at the finish. The mouthfeel as mentioned earlier, was very thick and creamy. Very little carbonation. Slightly warming alcohol at the finish, very well hidden. The combination of the creamy mouthfeel and the flavor was brilliant. This is what a barley wine should be! Truly top notch!!! yesyouam (611), Fairport, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 18, 2007 Immort Ale is a hazy, raspberry red ale with a sand colored head that mostly diminishes. Dark wood, Band-aids and medicine, a touch of sour and perhaps some banana: all are present in the aroma. Immort is full bodied and smooth. Thick and syrupy with soft carbonation. It’s a bit dusty in the finish. It’s very sweet and quite bitter. It starts out sweet, turns sour, and then turns bitter right about the time the alcohol hits. Sweetness and perhaps juniper linger for a good while. It’s a bit sweet for my taste. This might be a good one to sit around in the cellar for a year. HOPSHUNTER (396), Tampa, Florida, USA

I’m not sure if it was something I ate but this beer was horrible. It tasted like smoked fish yuk! I dumped 3/4 of this beer in the sink. I like Dogfish, hated this beer. I am quite perplexed at all the positive feedback. ogglethorp (890), Ohio, USA

Pours a reddish brown color with a fairly small tan colored head that settles. Aroma is sligtly smokey, maple, caramel, burnt sugar. Flavor is caramel, toffee, maple, hints of vanilla, slight smoke, some dark fruits, alcohol, as it warmed that band-aid flavor started to come out, I liked it better on the cooler side. Palate is full bodied, mildly carbonated, silky smooth texture, sticky, finishes sweet. I actually thought this was quite good, a lot going on here. I thought the alcohol was pretty well hidden, but I like a nice hit of it in my BW. Finally a DFH brew that I enjoyed. However, that being said I’d still much rather have an Victory Old Horizontal and its much cheaper. Another DFH that I’d probably only have on a very rare occasion, if ever again. darn1207 (668), Tallahassee, Florida, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jun 15, 2007 Deep coppery amber in color. Not too much head. Toffee and roasted malts in the nose. Full and oily on my palate. Coffee flavors and some dark fruits. Alcohol shows through as it warms. (how the hell do they hide 21% in the 120 min ipa and have this much alcohol on an 11% beer?!?!) raceface9465 (2), Tampa, Florida, USA does not count | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 15, 2007 Pours a golden Mahogany color.
