| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jan 19, 2009 pours a very deep brown with a thick and creamy tan head and nice lacing. aroma is excellent and has notes of rasins and millk chocolate. sweet coffee flavor with some roastiness and finishes nicely with well balanced hops and a lingering espresso taste. only drawback is a mild alcohol flavor at the end. though i expected a decent beer, this was better than i thought it would be. halfonit (484), Fall River, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 18, 2009 Updated: Nov 21, 2009Can Dogfish Head do no wrong? I’m starting to think they can’t. Has a beautiful deep, hazy dark brown color. Aroma is of malts, hops, nuts, coffee, and a little bit of a burnt scent. This tastes so smooth, probably one of the smoothest brown ales I’ve had. Has a pleasant full bodied aftertaste that is nothing short of near perfection. Another quality brew from Dogfish Head. Cheers. JohnQPublic (387), Brooklyn, New York, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 14, 2009 Bottle into Sam Adams Lager glass. Pours a very dark clear brown with hints of red escaping, and a one-finger, pillowy khaki head that doesn’t want to go away. Solid wall of heavy lacing. Nose is a nice combination of roasty coffee, bit of caramel sweetness, molasses. Taste starts off with a dry, roasty bready note, hints of molasses and even cola sweetness, with dark fruit and molasses coming out more around mid-palate, hints of cocoa. Roasty coffee note starts to take over right before the finish, with just a hint of floral hops, and the finish is very dry and lingers fairly lightly on the palate. Mouthfeel is fairly creamy, medium bodied. Seems more like a combination of a dry porter and a brown than anything. Good beer, but not my favorite take on the style. gunhaver (1044), Tampa, Florida, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 11, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown color, with a big rocky cotton candy-like tan head and prominent lacing. Aroma of raisins, coffee, ground roast, caramel. Big roasted flavors, with coffee being prominent and caramel finishing softly through the harshness of the roast. Smooth smokiness is present throughout. Drinkable, very good. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Jan 10, 2009 12oz bottle. Dark brown with a small head. Sweet malty aroma with caramel and some vinous, alcoholic fruit along with a light roasted malt character. Roasty coffee is prominent in the flavor along with dried alcoholic fruit. Finishes hoppy, but pretty sweet as well. Tastes more alcoholic than it is. It IS hoppy, but not really the dark IPA than people claim. This just finished a bit too sweet and alcoholic; I definitely wouldn’t drink more than one, which is what I want out of an IPA or brown ale dkachur (2434), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA

Pours an orange brown color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Big aroma of chocolate slightly roasted malts and caramel. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Jan 6, 2009 A very solid brown. Nearly perfect although the alcohol taste seemed a bit too harsh. Very much tasted of coffee, and had a nice thick brown head. Butters (1658), Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 5, 2009 Sampled at the Second Cellar Reduction. Sampled after the saranac version. This one is much darker in brown with thin ring of offwhite head. Sweet raisin and hop aroma with notes of alcohol. Roast malt, coffee, chocolate, hop bitterness and some molasses on the finish. Nice balance between malt and hops, but tends toward the malty. Mildy creamy body. Coffee to finish it off.
