This one however has the added bitterness from the hops to make it drinkable. It still has the sweet malt that I am not a big fan of, which shows that a high IBU does not mean a bitter beer. The aroma is smooth of a light chocolate, even caramel, and ends with coffee. Not a bad beer, not a great beer. grebs (71), Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 11, 2009 A mighty fine beer. Dark brown with a clean, surprisingly lasting head. Bold flavors, malt and hop well balanced. Caramel is the prevailing flavor in this one. Coffee, chocolate, and hop bitterness in the back end. Darker than most brown ales and shares some characteristics of its darker brethren. Supremely balanced and shockingly sessionable for its ABV. Can be a quick or slow drink. jport4087 (91), Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 10, 2009 Pours dark brown like a stout. Same coffee and chocolatety flavor of a stout with a nice hoppy bite to balance the caramel malts. Good beer overall. humulushound (133), British Columbia, Canada
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 9, 2009 Pours deep coffee color with small, lacy, tan head. I get caramel, coffee, bitter chocolate and molasses in the nose. Flavor is bitter-sweet chocolate, coffee, earth and spice with a balanced finish. Body is velvet and creamy. A highly drinkable brown ale that looks more like a stout. zdk (245), New York, USA

Rich caramel malts, molasses, chocolate... not as nutty as I expect from browns (maybe this is even getting close to a stout?) Still, very complex and delicious flavor. Nice hop presence, but not overpowering. Great sipper for any season. drowland (1418), Tallahassee, Florida, USA

Very good for a straight up "brown ale." Big sweet taste with touches of coffee and cream. Not a huge hop flavor, but it’s there. The hop bitterness is covered by the malt flavor. jmulv (93), Rensselaer, New York, USA
