Licorice aroma, some roasted malts, toffee. Very malty body, lots of caramel and roastiness here. Slightly bitter, burnt toast finish. Tasty and quaffable. Elwood (677), Leesburg, Virginia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 21, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours very dark brown with a small, foamy, tan head. The nose is a little boozy with notes of earth, wood, roasted malt, dark brown sugar, and nuts. Medium carbonation with a rich, slightly chewy mouthfeel. It has a rich palate with notes of earth, brown sugar, a hint of coffee, burnt notes, and a little vanilla. There is a little dryness on the back end too. Medium finish with some lingering wood notes. Overall a very full bodied brown ale that is highly complex and worth seeking out! DuffManSW (293), Riverside, California, USA

Pours a dark red brown with a creamy light brown head with good retention.. Had a nice lacto sweetness with a little roastiness in the aroma.. Tasted like a coffee beer with some dark roasted malts.. Good stuff! drseusszb200 (212), Florida, USA

Dark, redish brown brew with huge light caramel head that lasts. sweet aromatics with notes of brown sugar and sweeter coffee. Tastes of nice blends of IPA-like hoppy bite and a typical brown ale caramel maltyness. Chocolate, great stuff! gobeers (11), Wisconsin, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jul 13, 2009 Dark beer with a thick brown head. Malty aroma similar to their IPAs. Taste was full malty. Probably a high AE. Good beer. The thickness was a bit much. Sorry I didn’t like this like everyone else. Like a lot of homebrews I had that weren’t end fermented or high on the unfermentables MoDog (927), Griffith, Indiana, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 12, 2009 12oz bottle (Bottled on 1/09/09) and served in an English pint glass. Medium brown pour with a thin head of tan foam that slowly settled into a lasting cap. Good lacing. The aroma consisted of strong coffee, burnt sugar, and some light herbal hops. The flavor had mildly bitter coffee with cream, caramel, and some fairly aggressive hops (light citrus and herbs). Medium to full-bodied. Light carbonation. Having had this really fresh and then this slightly aged bottle, this has held up pretty nicely. The hoppy aroma and flavor have mellowed a bit. An interesting brown ale. hickey (32), Georgia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jul 9, 2009 Another personal favorite, the DF IBA is heavy and yet refreaching at the same time.
On tap at Taco Macs, the beer retained the malty head of a stout or basic brown. A very smooth characteristic to the palate, completely the inverse of subliminal IPAs here.
The flavor is intensely malty and hoppy at the same time. The palate begins with hops, alcohol, and carmel, but ends with the same heat, alcohol and toastiness.
Overall, a beer well worth shelling out $$$ for.
