Commercial Description:
Inspired by a tale of a cask doctor who brought sluggish ales back to life by suspending a fig in them. Brewed from 100% Maris Otter pale ale malt, a blend of fine hops and conditioned on dates and figs. User Instructions: open bottle, pour contents into two snifters. Enjoy. ALTERNATIVELY: Walk hand-in-neck with bottle into the middle of the woods. Use shovel to dig 2x2 hole three feet deep. Seal bottle in plastic bag. Place in hole and pack with dirt. Memorize location and leave. Return exactly one year later. Dig up bottle, open and enjoy.

Bottled 11/10/05, rated Feb. 2006. Beer poured orangey color with actually a little head, some bubbles and some lacing (surprising for 15% abv). Aroma was sweet. Flavor put me off at first. A noticeable metallic taste was prevalent early on but after it warmed up even a little, was gone altogether (weird)...makes me think it might have been me. Flavor warmed to orangey with some nice hop twang...sort of a perfectly balanced amalgamation of oranges, honey and grapefruit (hops). This was a darned fine barleywine...tops of the style for me! Alcohol was well tempered...didn’t even seem like it would need aging. RERATE 8/2007 - 10 month old bottle. The 2006 Version after 10 months seems like it could use 10 more. I still enjoyed the beer, but this vintage is still REALLY hot, felt like I was pouring liquid fire down my throat. That being said, I still really dug it...I think I’ll just let the remainder of my 4 pack sit for some more months.

This is a FIERCE beer. It pours a deep amber/mahogany with dates, figs, cherries, and many fruits in the aroma. Alcohol presence pervades the beer. It is so much more complex than a beer that will mess you up. It takes at least a four-pack to get acquainted with all the tastes.

Pours a cloudy, deep mahogany color with a small head. Giant aroma; cherries, raisins, sweet malts, cinnamon, and burning alcohol dominate. Big bodied brew, very sweet, sticky caramel malts. Lots of rich fruits here. Warming, alcoholic finish, a touch of citrus tanginess. A great, complex brew.

2007 Bottle. Nose is spice and butterscotch with some faint pine-hop underneath and a touch of banana and fig. Clear but thick orange amber with a long lived hazy head, thin and heavy-lacing. Alcohol-heavy but smooth and creamy with a sweet finish. Slightly too much alcohol presence, but for 15% it’s expected.

Cloudy red/brown with thin to no head. Aroma of fruits and alcohol. Very strong barleywine (15%) and I think you can taste it in this beer. Very sweet and still a very good barleywine. I recently had the Three Floyds Alpha Kong and I think I liked it better.

Bottle at home (Thanks Puzzl for the trade) - shared with Mette. Cloudy red/brown - white head. High sweetness, raisins, plums, dates, figs, candy, vingummi, light light hoppy, light light dusty and ashes aroma, wineous. Dry finish. Powerfull. 15% ABV is very well hidden.

12oz. bottle dated 1/2004. Pours a cloudy, murky yellowish, orangish, brown. Sudsy white head, largish bubbles. Head settles into a dense thin ring that lingers through the glass. Lots of sediment I tried to leave most of it in the bottle. Smells pretty damn sweet. Caramel, and a hint of citrus on the nose. Tastes of caramel and over-ripe citrus, maybe oranges. Quite a bit of alcohol and barley. Thick, but not too thick. Pretty good carbonation for such an old beer. Coats the mouth a bit. Can’t drink too many of these, I’ll die. But I highly recommend this vintage and older yet, I think it would have been good a couple years down the line.

2007 bottle on 12/12/09. pours a deep copper with a 1/4" white head... big sweet aroma filled with candi sugar, deep fruit notes and a touch of apple... the alcohol has really left the nose after 2 years... medium body with port like qualities... raisins, figs, other dark fruits mixed with a touch of wood. strong finish with a small alcohol presence and more figs. this one is doing well....

’07 bottle. this one will kick you in your head.... the 15% abv is evident from the aroma to the finish.... but not overly so. A very strong Barley Wine and a much different Barley Wine than I’m used to. I think this one is absolutely wonderful and enchanting. It warms you up real quick... pours a deep red with virtually no head or carbonation.... much like a spirit. You can smell the aroma right out of the bottle before it’s even poured... Once poured, there are aromas of fruits, alcohol and caramel. Thin to medium body that unleashes it’s various flavors on the palate... a slight alcohol bite on the finish rounds this one off. An instant favorite.... too bad I can’t buy it in my state (GA - lame alcohol limit laws)...
