Commercial Description:
Inspired by a tale of a cask doctor who brought sluggish ales back to life by suspending a fig in them. Brewed from 100% Maris Otter pale ale malt, a blend of fine hops and conditioned on dates and figs. User Instructions: open bottle, pour contents into two snifters. Enjoy. ALTERNATIVELY: Walk hand-in-neck with bottle into the middle of the woods. Use shovel to dig 2x2 hole three feet deep. Seal bottle in plastic bag. Place in hole and pack with dirt. Memorize location and leave. Return exactly one year later. Dig up bottle, open and enjoy.

’07 Bottle. Pours deep orange/brown with a small tan head. Strong and almost cloyingly sweet aroma of candied oranges, apricots, mango, a touch of caramel, a good dose of hops, and a strong overtone of alcohol. Much fruitier and less alcoholic flavor than expected. Lots of apricots, some orange zest, plenty of piny hops throughout, and light warming alcohol towards the finish. Palate is full, smooth, a bit syrupy, and warming. Not very complex, but nicely balanced, and dangerously easy drinking. Got an ’05 bottle to crack soon, will see if there is any improvement. Must say though, I’ll take an Old Horizontal over this any day.

Pours brownish-orange with a small but tight head. Head dissipates within a minute leaving an off white tint on the top of the liquid. Strong smell of hops with undertones of alcohol, malts, and orange. Taste is of hoppy harsh alcohol! Second taste is hoppy citrus mixed with sweet malts, sugar, and apricot. Alcohol comes through strong but does a great job warming the body (just as I see fit for Barley Wines). New aromas of apricot and dates begin to come through as my glass diminishes. Smooth mouth feel once you get past the abv. Could have been better if they didn’t make it such a big beer. But then it just wouldn’t be a true DFH after all!

Powerful and pungent. Nice sweet-hoppy fresh aroma. Brownish red color with just a thin head. Strong and sweet with a pine/citrus flavor. Very busy beer. I sampled this the first time nearly a year ago, and I thouight it would mellow with age. Just tried again and it tasted the same. Still very good, but there is alot going on here. Should have waited longer.

Pours thick, hazy orange/amber, with a thin but creamy head. Very strong and sweet flavor, some citrus notes. Alcohol comes through at the end. Good barleywine, but a little overpowering. Glad I tried it though.

Pours a nice red, almost with a pink tinge, with a thin head that dissapates quickly. The aroma is great... yeast and alcohol mix with raspberries and cherries, but not in a lambic kind of way. Really awesome aroma. Funny, as I tasted it, I had forgotten that it was a Dogfish Head and thought that it tasted like Dogfish Head’s raspberry beer. I wish I knew what they use to make their beers so distintictive. Is it the yeast? The body is a little watery for my taste, but it’s not dry or anything like that. Kind of rough. I don’t know if age would help it. Probably just needs more body. Not a bad beer. Worth it just for the aroma.

Wow. This was awesome! I like my beer strong and I like my beer to finish strong and this beer delivered in both categories! It acts almost like a delicious sipping wine with a sweet finish. There was a VERY faint astringent quality on the sides of the tongue that other people had noted but that is such a minor complaint that it is easily made up for with the smooth feel on the tongue and sweet alcohol flavor. I will be buying more - don’t know if it’ll make it a year if I know where I burried them!

12 ounces. Clear pale amber colour with a great white head. Weak aroma of malt, sweetness and alcohol, also hints of fresh fuit. Very sweet malty flavour with a little hints of sugar and some wine-like. Ends up very alcoholic.

2007. intense alcohol on the nose like fingernail polish remover. hazy amber and a thin head. tastes like a junior 120. dark soft velvety caramel with a fresh pulled taffy finish. After only a few months, became sweet and perfumey in the nose with notes of candied orange, intoxicating and intriguing. stepped up in appearance as well, with a well rounded orange amber color and a dense creamy white head. I have to say that I do not notice any of the alcohol anymore, all I taste is dense oranged sweetness, full and heavy. My chest warms quickly like I’ve sipped some brandy. This is yummy and I know I’ll be finishing the glass much too quickly. After a year, smells of tame apple brandy. Figs have come out more, sticky and juicy. Still huge, dense, intimidating. Alcohol is complementary. This marked progression will have me buying more of this year’s vintage to drink over the next few years. Good thing I have a backyard. 123009
