Commercial Description:
Inspired by a tale of a cask doctor who brought sluggish ales back to life by suspending a fig in them. Brewed from 100% Maris Otter pale ale malt, a blend of fine hops and conditioned on dates and figs. User Instructions: open bottle, pour contents into two snifters. Enjoy. ALTERNATIVELY: Walk hand-in-neck with bottle into the middle of the woods. Use shovel to dig 2x2 hole three feet deep. Seal bottle in plastic bag. Place in hole and pack with dirt. Memorize location and leave. Return exactly one year later. Dig up bottle, open and enjoy.

12 oz bottle courtesy of secret santa. Thanks Rudy. Pours a hazy orange-amber color with a small off-white head that soon recedes to a fine film. The aroma is moderate with melon, honey, spices and dust. The flavor is fruity with melons, plums, raisins, wood, and alcohol. The mouthfeel is silky smooth and malty, with good carbonation.. The finish is short and dry. Overall: A Very good barley wine, much enjoyed.

Tons of vanilla and honey in the aroma, accompanying molasses and dark fruit. Flavor is caramel, dark fruit, toffee, and brown sugar. Syrupy with an alcohol bite.

Rating #814 for this beer.

12/15/2007: DFH Olde School smells a bit like vanilla liquour with some light fruity malt undertones. It tastes malty and smooth with some malty fruitiness (like Marris Otter) and vanilla. It is slightly hot due to the alchol, sticky on the lips, and smooth on the palate. Overall this beer is quite tasty and I look forward to trying the bottle that I have aging in few years...

2006 Vintage

10/17/2009: Dogfish Head Olde School Barleywine... Aroma: Aged citrus; sharp alcohol. Appearance: Cloudy, dull apricot; slow, limited carbonation; no head or crown. Flavor: Caramel malt, date sweetness; candied citrus peel, aged; prune and apricot; mild to moderate level of remaining bitterness; powerful alcohol in the flavor and through the nostrils. Palate: Medium-light to medium; thinning out... Overall: I don’t think that this beer is improving with age...

12 oz. bottle. Enjoyed after aging for one year (I did not bury this in the woods). Pours hazy amber color with a small white head. The aroma had a thick caramel malt note with ripe fruit and still some earthy hops. The flavor is more sweet caramel malt, apricots, citrus, hop bitterness, and alcohol. Medium-full bodied and still a bit hot after a year.

Bottle courtesy of ericandersnavy. Cloudy red pour. Smell is candied fruit, fat sweet notes and nail polish remover. Extremely sweet flavor. Has similar elements to the Beast and the 120. Solid finish. Good beer and very powerful. The ABV is surely felt.

12 oz bottle split with a friend from Binnys (Orland Park, IL). Pours a golden hue, light amber, largely transparent with head that dies immediately to minimal film. Aromas are a bit sweet, corny sweetness with caramel, toffee, minimal hops, brewhouse wort feeling. Hmmmmm. Initial is sweet, a bit of a syrupy body. Caramel and toffee sweetness, although lighter, syrupy but minimal sweetness. Light florals, sweetness comes in fuller further in. Minimal complexity with the hops died out. Ok, too thick, sweet for me.

Bottle@Home, bottled nov 04. Cookie dough and carrots aroma. Cloudy, amber colour, beige firm small head, good lace. Very very sweet, very very bitter, tangerine, lots of spices, pepper, nutmeg, laurel, cookie dough. Very sticky, very alcoholic. Flavours are complex but still due to it’s sugar sweetness one-dimensional. Strangely enough it’s age didn’t really show.
