Commercial Description:
Big Brown Ale aged on palo santo wood from Paraguay. This beer is a 12% abv, highly roasty, and malty brown ale aged on the wood of the Palo Santo tree from Paraguay. Palo Santo means "holy tree" and it's wood has been used in South American wine-making communities. We were lucky enough to get our hands on 20 blocks of the super-dense wood and the wood was added to the ageing tank after fermentation.

Bottle from Utobeer. Very dark brown with a small beige head. Lovely coffee, chocolate and vanilla aroma. Fruity, even with a hint of vinous bubblegum, as well as vanilla and some roast. Chocolate. Alcoholic. Full-bodied and flat. Quite unique.

Impressingly nice flavoured and very dark ale with a marvelous long lasting palate. Very warming and moderately spicy finish.

Bottle. Pours an opaque dark brown with a wispy light brown head that clings to the edge of the glass. Aroma is very rich, woody with dark chocolate hints. Flavor is exceptionally rich and woody with some spicy notes, dark chocolate, cherry. Very full with dry woody character, a nice carbonation. Very potent up front and a little hot more of a sipper.

A nice dark heavy beer. Pours like syrup, and has just about as much head too.... It is nice although the wood notes come across too powefully for me. It has a complex flavor with caramel, vanilla, some fruity spice notes and almost a touch of leather. A nice drinking beer but after two your taste buds are toast...

One of the most interesting beers that I’ve drank. Pours blacks....it’s impossible to see through this beer. Not much head.....maybe its the alcohol content. Aromas are very malty...caramel malts swirl from the glass with aromas of toffee and vanilla, which are probably from the wood. There is a certain sweetness that I can’t put my finger on.....maybe its the Palo Santo. Upon tasting, lots of roasted malts cover the tongue with hints of molasses and spice. There’s a definite burn from the the alcohol...this one is kinda hot. Not for the beginning beer drinker......

Appearance: Thick black tar. Half-finger of light brown head. Not much else to say but it’s intimidating. Pours like latex paint. The first whiff is of a roasted porter. Heavy burst of alcohol singes the nostrils. The oak so heavily advertisted on the label is actually nicely subdued. Any vanilla in the nose is strictly theoretical. The taste is a heavy blast of alcohol, with some serious oak. This all overshadows the second wave of the burnt porter malt in the aftertaste. As it warms, the caramel and vanilla come out like a nice iced coffee. Toward the end, some raisin and dark tobacco. The feel thick and chewy -- and outstanding. It’s a burn at first, and then a cooldown. I’ll tell ya, this is one challenging beer. Really strong and ruthlessly thick, but extremely balanced: brutally burnt and yet smoothly sweet.

Rich, sweet malts, but it still tastes like a malt beverage of some kind. Interesting edge of fruit. Too highly carbonated. Like an Impy Brown or something. Bottle.
