Nose is fresh cut wood with some rose essence, dark fruit and a little rum. Flavor is sweet with raisins, raspberries, and brown sugar together with a creaminess that flows with vanilla and some roasted coffee. The palate is sweet but not chewy/sticky with a very mild alcohol warmth considering the ABV. Overall, interesting flavor makes for a great beer, I was almost put off by the aroma, thinking it was going to be flowery and woody, not the case. It turned out just right. Wow, this is a big beer, almost imperial porter. Dark chocolate, tar, holy wood, and a raspberry liquor finish. Mmm, this is a memorable beer. DougShoemaker (2856), Toronto, Canada

Aroma of tar, wood, scalded milk, espresso and burned wood. Black, red at the sides. Flavour is a full on roasted malt, rich coffee, pitfruit, and some dark chocolate notes. Full bodied, very well balanced, oily, viscous and woody. Marvellous elixir. Thank You so much Ron. lithy (1850), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 11, 2008 Rating #400. Bottled 5/28/08. Pours basically black with a dark brown at the edges. Looks thick and viscous with a head that consists of a quick fizz of tan carbonation that is gone immediately. Smell is alcohol, tar, wood, molasses, and syrup. The taste is powerful malts, some caramel and toastiness, then a beautifully integrated alcohol presence, thick smoky notes almost whiskey like and the some peat like a nice scotch. Earthy and woody, this one is a fantastic beer with a great story. ditmier (1120), Boise, Idaho, USA

| 2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 5/20 | Dec 8, 2008 Poured thick, black with no head. I was very surprised at the consistency of this beer. The aroma is definately malty. When I tried it, I thought there was a very distinct maltiness to it, with no hops and there is a fairly strong medicinal overtone that I get that is unpleasant. There are some hints of wood, that come through as smokey or ashtray at times. Not a beer that I would drink again. robertjm (418), El Cerrito, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 7, 2008 Praise God!! Dogfish is now available in California. Pours a dark tan head. Held up to a light bulb no light shows through the glass. Definately a strong ale/barley wine-esque variety. Aroma is definately on the malty side, but perhaps I am smelling a bit of effect of the wood.. Definately has a woody flavor in the beer. Sort of like a burbon barrell stout without the bourbon overtones. Body is very thick, which does not surprise me since it has 12% alc. Hop character is there toning down the sweetness of the malt, but, as with the aroma, this beer definately leans to the malt side of the spectrum. Very warming on the back of the throat. Warmth lingers on the pallate even a couple of minutes after drinking it. A bit on the expensive side. $15/4pack at BevMo, but am happy to see anything from Dogifish finally make it to Cali. Think aging this would help quite a bit.
