ElJefe (506), Rochester, New York, USA Jun 1, 2008 Black pour with a creamy brown head. Aroma of plum wine, wood, fruitcake, and slight hints of coffee. Flavor of burnt wood, roasted nuts, raisin, and earthiness. Substantial body, but not syrupy. Light, smooth carbonation. Very unique, complex, and enjoyable. This would go great with a cigar. All the DFH haters out there can bite me.
knights97 (47), Tennessee, USA Aug 20, 2008 Pours to a pitch black, thick in body and a small tan head, the strength of this beer is the smooth, malty taste balanced with a wood taste, not overpowering nor leave any bitter after taste that lingers like other beers while at the same time, hiding the 12% alc. Great beer, JAXSON (90), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 20, 2008 Really dark brown to black pour with pretty caramel head of tiny bubbles. Great lacing. Surprisingly sweet smell, but a solid roasted backbone. Sweet and creamy in the mouth. Huge and bold, not unlike alot of Dogfish offerings. Alot of smoke in the finish, which was interesting and set this beer apart kind of. Huge malt and sugars. Very good. mephisto (1097), Taiwan Aug 20, 2008 pitch black with beige head, it has coffee aroma blended with caramel and chocolately nose. the flavor is vanilla with chocolate background, very caramelly finish. Beer_Hawk (673), Murfreesboro, Tennessee, USA Aug 19, 2008 Bottle. Poured black with a thin tan head. Sweet aroma of caramel and milk chocolate backed with light fruits (cherry?). The flavor had caramel, chocolate, and dark fruits, with a nice vanilla backing. Medium to full body and smooth carbonation. Very nice! joet (1622), Fulton, California, USA Aug 19, 2008 This is a great balance of intense but manageable features. Foresty wood flavors and aromas on viscous and creamy body that avoids sugary sweetness and excessive heft. No candy sugar headache material either. No flaws aside this an impressive vanilla, light cocoas, rum and cookies kind of good. The lack of fruit flavors is very welcome. The alcohol was hardly there. In fact, my first guess was about 6.8 which made me wonder if the official 12% is accurate? Delicious and impressive. Very unique.
