00cobraR (933), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Mar 2, 2008 what a great offering from one of my favorite brewers. Pours out a deep mohogany color with a small head. aroma was hoppy with hints of malt, wood, and citrus. I couldnt stop sniffing this beer. Flavor was very interesting. Had a roasted malt body with sweet finish to it. There were some other notes that i noticed. I guess that was the palo santo wood. nice job!
BeerGestapo (246), Windsor, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 17, 2008 (USA) Brew courtesy of AFI96, Thanks Waylo !! Pours a deep brown color with a med-tan head. Aroma is of dry fruits, dark malts, and caramel. The taste is some what of a suprise because i was expecting this super hoppy flavor of Dogfish Head !! But what i found was a nice blend of chocolate, roasted malts, and vanilla. The 12% is hidden fairly well, but it will leave you nice and toasty. darn1207 (193), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Jul 17, 2008 12oz bottle. darker than I was expecting - near black actually. brown head disappears quickly. woody malt, raisins, vanilla, cherry and a little alcohol in the aroma - very interesting. things I taste: raisins, alcohol, chocolate, honey and pepper. woody and seems chewy - though the palate isn’t that thick. there are a crazy amount of smells and tastes happening here - but the ultimate summation for me was: it tastes a little like smoked salmon. so not sure it totally works, but A for effort. SETANTA (555), Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 17, 2008 Aroma alcoholic, deep roasted malts, dark fruits. Opaque dark brown color, dark tan head, small bubbles in creamy head, which fell slowly. Flavor has alcoholic, solventy burn, dark malt is intensely nutty... like walnut shell, some unique bitterness that I haven’t experienced before (the wood?), vanilla, lingering maltiness on the tongue... maybe needs some aging to smooth out. LooseCannon (581), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Jul 17, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours pitch black in color with thin brown head which does not last long. Aroma sweet, chocolate and caramel. Taste woody, chocolate and roasted malt with bitter finish. Butters (263), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jul 17, 2008 Delicious. pours near black with a hint of tan head. Aroma of vanilla, currants, plum, oak, and cherries. Flavor is roasted with some caramel, honey, and a bit of alcohol warming. Mouthfeel is medium full. Chocolate in the finish. For 12% abv, this is great. But it is on the pricey side, so i can only go so high on my rating
