| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Dec 6, 2009 Pours the consistency of dark brown maple syrup out of the botela. Has a half inch brown head that settle to a film before enjoyment can begin. Looks alcoholy in the liquid. Nose is roasted malt with brown sugar maple and alcohol. Taste is punchy brown roasted malt with sage and whatever. Gives a bad headache the next day. Are we done with this yet? Merrill (76), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 3, 2009 Very dark brown from a 12oz, with med. brown head, fast light lace. A lovely candy-malt aroma, very pungent with an edge of tree sap. Flavor is very original with bold malt filled with a sweet tangy woody, cedar-like flavor. Cuban coffee comes to mind. The palate is a bit oily and the finish hangs on like woodsmoke. Overall very pleasant Fred82 (399), Montreal, Quebec, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 2, 2009 12oz bottle from Winooski. Pours pitch black with a small brown head. Nose is very rich. Sweet, fruity, alcohol, quite malty and roasty. Hints of liquorice and molasses. Some vanilla. Woody and a bit peppery. Taste has lots of alcohol, some dark fruits, lots of malt and some vanilla and barrel. Woody. Slight bitterness. Nice sipper, awesome winter warmer. A bit too boozy. Texture is oily. Finish is warm, liquorice, vanilla and roasted malt. Delightful. Gets a bit spicier at the end. mcd410x (13), Florida, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 2, 2009 Bottle. Was really looking forward to this. Nice aroma of malt, wood and some spice. Dark appearance. Taste was chocolate, leather, dry, spice but seemed overwhelmed by the alcohol. Nowhere near as complex as some of their other brews. Palate was as dry as a can of Nestle’s Quik. Perphaps, it was a bad bottle. Aromas are woody and robust. Light lacing, sips are loaded with many different flavors and warmth from the alcohol but most predominant taste is the lingering wood that comes from the wood used in aging. Good american strong ale, not a personal favorite, probably wont buy again. SteelyDog (11), Texas, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | Nov 29, 2009 Salty alcoholic aroma. Pours dark black with little head. Taste is strong and starts sweet and ends with a warm alcohol feel in the mouth. Be sure to sip as that a big gulp will destroy the palate and likely make you hate this beer. Huge flavor, but takes some getting used to. DeputyAndy (85), New Jersey, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Nov 29, 2009 Pours nearly stout black with a mocha head. Very wood like aroma. Tastes highly roasted with chocolate woody flavors blending with a thick alcohol taste. Aftertaste sits thick on the tongue. Very big beer. Reminds me more of smoked porter than American strong. Aging one to try later. SHANER4 (377), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 28, 2009 Bottle 12oz. - Poured dark brown with small tan head.
Aroma - rich dark chocolate, what must be Palo Santo wood, raisins and booze....Very nice!!!
Flavor - Dusty woodsy chocolate taste mixed with nice balance of alcohol. Definite sipper with high ABV., finishes with roasted almond taste and slight alcohol burn!
Palate - medium/full bodied with velvety texture. Average carbonation, finish is smokey and lingers a bit.
Overall - Kick Ass brew, Tastes more like a stout or brown ale but still a fantastic beer. One of DFH’s best brews!!
