I WAS SLIGHTLY INTIMIDATED BY THIS BEER WHEN I RECIEVED IT FROM THE DOGFISH BREWERY IN A VARIETY PACK, NOT ONLY BECAUSE IT IS 12%ALC BUT ALSO BECAUSE IM NOT SUPER HIGH ON OAK AGED BEERS NOR IM I THAT FOND OF MALT BEVERAGES. HOWEVER, ONCE AGAIN DOGFISH HAS PLEASANTLY SUPRISED ME. THIS BEER POURS A ROUBUST BLACK WITH NO HEAD IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE FLAT SODA AND HAS A STUNNING RAISIN TYPE AROMA ALMOST LIKE A WINE. THE FLAVORS, LIKE THE SMELL AND LOOK, IS ALSO QUITE ROBUST YET NOT OVER POWERING,THE SWEET FLAVOR IS OF ROASTED MALTS, UNSWEETEND CHOCOLATE, SLIGHT VANILLA AND TANGY LICORICE WHICH IS WELL BALANCED WITH CARBONATION THAT ADDS A LITTLE BITE ON THE TOUNGE , IVE HAD A FEW OTHER BEERS THAT WERE SIMILAR TO THIS ONE (EX: THEW BEAST) AND THIS ONE IS BY FAR MORE ENJOYABLE.. NOT RECOMENDED FOR A NIGHT OUT AT THE BAR, BUT QUITE A GOOD AFTER DINNER BEER.

Dec 22, 2009 Bottled. darker dark brown with thin head. sweet chocolate and coffee dominate nose and flavor keeps these notes and adds booze, wood, and caramel and lighter citrus. End is weird and original with dry feel leaving a filmy feel in the mouth. Big bodied and oily texture. A weird but definitely creative offering.

Dec 21, 2009 Shazzam! Whoaaaa, nelly bell! Stupendous beer! Not exactly a brown ale as friend Euel says, it’s brown and it’s an ale. Ok. ’nuff said on that. But it pours with a small tan head and some lace. Color is an opaque dark, almost black, brown. Aroma is very rich and earthy, fecund, licorice, old leather, and bittersweet. Flavor’s the same but more full and luxurient. Kim Jong Il would love this beer. Hail, feerless leader. Body is velvety smooth and enticing. Almost too rich. Not a session beer. Atlantic Monthly had a great article on brewmaster.

Dec 20, 2009 Bottle. Pours black with a thin brown head. Aroma is composed of roasty, coffee, and woody aspects with just a little alcohol. Taste is fairly bitter accompanied by a high alcoholic mouthfeel and a little carbonation.

Dec 19, 2009 Poured pitch black. Sweet malty aroma. Very sweet. Roast malt and caramel taste with notes of oak and vanilla. A bit boozy, but very well done.

Dec 15, 2009 bottle from midway mart in denton, tx. poured a maroonish black/dark brown with a tan head leaving some lace on the glass, also had some decent legs. aroma was caramel, red wine, grape, raisin, and what seemed to be a woody character. flavor was chocolate, grapes, other dark fruits, alcohol, and a nice little dry bitter on the finish. body was medium with about medium carbonation. all in all i liked this one.

Dec 12, 2009 Deep, dense brown pour with a head the colour of a fisherman’s arms. Huge aroma of roasted brown sugars and alcohol. Everything about this brew is shades of brown. Brownies, toasted brown sugar, dark sweet dried fruits, and Pacific hops all found here in abundance. Wonderfully creamy and intense meant to be savoured sip by sip. DFH has a challenge to Stone now. Where can I get some of the wood?

Dec 11, 2009 Very dark brown from a 12oz, with med. brown head, fast light lace. A lovely candy-malt aroma, very pungent with an edge of tree sap. Flavor is very original with bold malt filled with a sweet tangy woody, cedar-like flavor. Cuban coffee comes to mind. The palate is a bit oily and the finish hangs on like woodsmoke. Overall very pleasant

Dec 11, 2009 Bouteille de 12 oz. Arômes de caramel brûlé, d’alcool et de bois. Robe brune foncée, pas de mousse et effervescence faible. Très sirupeuse, une touche boisée et vanillée est présente, mais demeure réservée et est bien supportée par un beau malt caramel et une touche de réglisse. Finale sucrée et très alcoolisée. Il s’agit d’une bonne bière, mais l’alcool est vraiment très présent.
