Dopplebock1538 (71), Sanatoga, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 23, 2005 WOW! A real treat. Forget about the pumpkin. A very Solid ale. Full body. A great little head that weathers the session. The slight hint of spice cookies keeps you coming back for more. A very special brew. Well done! TheBeerLover (1013), DC Metro Area, USA Jan 28, 2006 This is a very delicious, and flavorful beer, that starts with a traditional brown ale recipe. It is then brewed with real pumpkin meat, and spiced with brown sugar, allspice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Coming in at 7% abv, this beer is a slice of liquid pumpkin pie, with a nice little kick to boot. Being based on a traditional brown ale, this beer has enough malt heft to stand up to the squashy pumpkin flavor, and the pumpkin pie spice.
Pumkin Ale pours to a beautiful, bright, deep orange color with a nice white head that fades, and a moderate to soft amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is wonderful. Aromas of a freshly baked pumpkin pie, flood the nose. Lots of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice aromas, linger and invite you to take a sip. When you do, the palate is full and inviting, with lots of "meaty" pumpkin flavors, paired with some good, hearty, sweet, and nutty malt, and spicy pumpkin pie spice flavors. Punkin Ale finishes with more of those pumpkin, malty, and spice flavors up front, then ends with lots of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice flavors, and a touch of alcohol heat, making this such a wonderful beer to drink.
This is without question one of the most impressive pumpkin ales I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. This is a style near and dear to me, and one I really seek out during the Fall season. What I really enjoy is you can really taste pumpkin flavor in this beer, and not just pumpkin pie spice flavors which is far too common in most examples of this beer style. The use of real pumpkin meat in this beer, really makes a difference. It retails for $8.99 a 4 pack in the markets DFH beers are sold, and I can tell you, is worth every penny. A natural with a big slab of pumpkin pie and vanilla ice cream, or to enjoy as a sipping beer after a hearty meal. IFearNoBeer (15), Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA Nov 28, 2003 As always, Dogfish Head does not disappoint. This stuff kicks ass. The richest and most pumpkin-y of the pumpkin ales I've tried this year. Better than Buffalo Bill's, and blows away Post Road's. Smooth, full of cinnamon and nutmeg spice, and just freakin delicious. WhiteAlePower (91), Long Island, New York, USA Feb 1, 2006 Depending on your tastes, this might not be for you. Dogfish head is known for taking that extra step toward flavour, they do not skimp here at all! This brew has ALMOST too much flavour, but it is quite good. I’m always excited to try something new from them. Nice dark colour, and decent head. Excellent aroma, I’d go so far as to say it’s mouth-watering! Na Zdrowie! GreatLibations (1299), Sasquatcho, Arizona, USA Mar 20, 2006 Updated: Oct 15, 2007The 2007 version has a bigger aroma with abundant punkin pie spice. I bumped up the rating almost a whole point.----------------
(2006 version rate 4.0) Pours a Brandy color with a shallow froth. Aroma is faint with lillte spice. Medium nectar with ample residual effers. Where this brew lacks in the nose, it makes up for in the flavor. A defined spicey character that is so refined that you have to think about it for a minute. Pumpkin, ginger, cinnamon, squash, and fruitcake. It’s complex and drinks like nectar. Highly recommended.
