Poured a half inch of cream colored head atop a pale ruddy amber body, I guess you could call it mahogany. Aroma is perfumey vinous, green raisins-white grapes, slight chocolate-caramel, sweet candi sugar, and rooty. Flavor was sweet candi sugar, sort of beety root sweetness, slight chocolatey-caramel, honey, and vinous. Palate was smooth witha refreshing subdued carbonation and slight syrupy feel. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 3, 2009 It pours a dark mahogany color with reddish accents and carries a small white head which fades quickly. The smell of it is instantly fruity and complex; raisins, brown sugar, and other fruits. It is very hard to pick out what is going on in the aroma. The taste of the Raison D’Etre is almost exactly as it smells, and leaves a bitter aftertaste which reminds me much of dry fruit. This brew goes down smooth, from beginning to end and it works very well. jesperhammer (344), Copenhagen, Denmark

Bottle @home.
31-MAY-2009.
Beautiful reddish colour with nice off-white head.
I search for something on the nose, but all I get is a yeasty smell?
Very malty and very belgian, although I can tell the rasins since I know they are there. That does make it a little wine-like.
Quite easy drinking and very far from the D’Extra.
Oh, and aromas does turn up later as it warms. This is a nice beer, but I brought it back from New York, and maybe I will not search it out again. RHeastings (433), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 23, 2009 Enjoyed via 12oz bottle in tulip glasses, pub glass, and mini pilsner glasses on several occasions. The beer pours a medium to dark brown, with some tinges of ruby. The nose shows aromas given off by a Belgian yeast strain, along with some malt, and a touch of raisony dark fruity notes. One of the interesting parts of having this beer is the fact that the samples I have been lucky enough to have have been different in terms of their flavors. The sample I enjoyed this evening seemed young, showing yeast derived flavors, along with some slightly winey notes, and some medium Belgian toasted malt. On other occasions, the balance has been even more focused on Belgian-type malts. In any case, this beer never fails to impress. Another splendid hybrid and almost absurdly creative effort from Dogfish Head. jbye4334 (719), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA

Aroma of caramel, dark, burnt sugars, earthy, with some fruit. Flavor is fruity with some dark malt undertones. Kind of bitter and dirty. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, and an earthy finish.
