Aroma is of candi sugar, caramel, anmd some dried fruits. Flavor is very smooth, hard to pick out anything that stands out, but in this case thats not a bad things, every melds together very well. 17thfloor (1511), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 2, 2008 Pours a hazy reddish amber with a small frothy beige head. Sweet aroma of raisins, dried fruits, yeast, dough and caramel. Lighter flavor, but very good, the alcohol shows a little too strong. The body is excellent, medium light with fine carbonation, but maybe too light for the flavor. Belgian sugar is easily detectable, some toastiness, somewhat yeasty/doughy, some caramel, dried fruits and a bit spicy. A fine beer on the same level as Goose’s Pere Jacque, but maybe a tad better. Worth aging. checkmatei1 (630), Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma of sweet malts, particularly raisins, and slightly alcoholic. Flavor is pretty much straight up malts. No particular flavors stand out to me. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 21, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours dark amber brown with off-white head. Aroam is brown suger, raisins, toffee and sweet malt. Flavor is of sweet malt, brown suger, toffee and raisins. A pleasent surprise as it is not yeasty like most belgain strong ales. Hides alcohol very well. Would buy again. JCastner (108), New York, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Aug 20, 2008 Pours a dark amber with an off white head that dissipates quickly. Not as much lacing as I would have expected. Aroma is of brown sugar, dried fruits (raisins included), and some malti-sweetness with a faint hint of alcohol. Medium to heavy body. Excellent first bitter sip balanced out with underlying sweetness. Finish is thick and slightly creamy. I don’t care what the other raters say, this is an excellent example of what a Belgian strong ale should be. Better, dare I say, than some of the higher rated Trappists. Stick a Belgian label on it and it would be more popular.
