MrChopin (60), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 13, 2008 2004 bottle. Super powerful nose of endless roasted malt and alcohol. Black with white lacing, very small head. Sweet chocolate with huge sweet malt/chocolate aftertaste and minor bitterness. Oily for an Imperial. Overall, very sweet. Too Sweet! Too too sweet!! A prime example of DFH’s common good-but-not-great excess. Where’s the balance?
johntreeter (3), Greenwood, Indiana, USA does not count May 10, 2008 07 bottle in snifter. Poured black as Chris Rock with a one finger light brown head that fell in two or three min. Lightly laced to the bottom ofthe glass. Sweet mocca aroma with hints of sherry, molasses, and a bit of alcohol. Taste follows suit and adds notes of oak and fruits. Big and creamy all over the palate with a mild carbonation and warm alcohol finish. Huge complex beer that is worth its wieght in oil. I will most certainly put one or two up to see how it ages. Theis (1736), Frederiksberg, Denmark May 9, 2008 Bottle at home - shared with Mette (Thanks to Puzzl for trading this). Pitch black - brown edges. Burned, sweetness, white sugar, brown sugar, syrup, licorice, dried dark fruits, raisins, prunes, vinous, light alcoholic taste. Very nice and complex. First Impression: Aroma is alcohol, raisins, prunes, fruity, wineish. Visuals are an exquisite ruby body, a very small tan head but great legs and lacing. Taste is grapey, full of various barleys, chocolate, cocoa, and flowers, perfume, rum, prunes, figs, sand. Palate is wet and thick to start, but with a quite dry, long, finish. A very deep and luxurious feel. Much more enjoyable as you get used to the overwhelming nature of it. Much like the 120 minute IPA, appreciation comes with time. Second Impression - a very deep, slightly off balance, but still very amazing beer. You have to sip it and pause to enjoy it, but if you take a calm approach, you’ll be thoroughly rewarded. On second thought, you’ll be amazed.

First Impression: Aroma is roasted, chocolate, nutty, and slightly metallic. Visuals are pitch dark body topped with a nice thick brown head, which dissipates in a few minutes but not completely. Lacing is nice. Taste does not disappoint. A deep, hoppy, roasted flavor. Some coffee, some dark chocolate, some smoke, but just a touch. Alcohol is very well hidden. Palate is back of tongue, spongey, yeasty, and blunt, long, very tasty finish. Nicely done. A grave presence. Second Impression: an impressive beer by any standard, but a great stout. Surprisingly drinkable, deep, delicious, and so very well balanced. Stone does amazing things.

Overall: 19 out of 20. This is one of the best beers I’ve ever had Hirsch13 (3), Amelia, Ohio, USA does not count May 7, 2008 THis was a very hard beer to rate, I must admit I was swayed prior to drinking this by the reviews on this site. How could I possibly give this beer a bas review it is in the 100th percentile! So the nose was overwhealming to begin with. THe smell of alcohol is pungent and very "THERE". I must admit I think the sweet not others have mentioned is there, but my nose said alcohol and bitters, with a thick wafting aroma. The palate started with a surprisingly mild front, the middle carried weight on my tounge and a resonance of barley and, as mentioned by others, malt. The back of the palate was WARM but smooth with a dark SLIGHT licorice finish along with the barley. Not my favorite but an EXPERIENCE ALL IN AND OF ITSELF. 8 Dollar bottle from THe Party Source in Newport KY, but spring the money and ride the tiger for this one. You want to say you have had this beer even if it isn’t your favorite.
