gam (1068), brisbane, Australia Nov 9, 2009 Stars off off medium tan good head butback to fine lace, very dark IMP,aroma coffee liccorice chocolate very rich, alcohol like port, vanilla molasses cola like plum ,flavour mellow coffee roasted taste liccorice alcohol is noticeable but not overly, port and rich chocolate molasses hint a sweetness and bitter that are equal some fizz, sharp roasted tastes but mellow to drink, finish superb roasted tastes an even bitter/sweet good mild fizz, great on the palate. wcampbell (572), Central, South Carolina, USA Nov 8, 2009 Not sure how old this was, but it probably should have been aged longer. Much stronger than it needed to be. Very sweet and alcoholic, which overpowered the other, milder elements of the beer. Full bodied and warming mouthfeel. Mostly licorice taste with mild whiskey tones. Alcoholic aroma. Not a huge fan. allendodd (18), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Nov 8, 2009 2006 12 oz bottle opened Nov 2009. From the cellar. I had three bottles of this in the cellar. Probably drank one when I bought it in 06 and the others have been sitting since. Damn it is nice. Sweet molasses nose with no noticeable alcohol. Thin and quickly dissipating head. Initial black cherry flavor with chocolate and roasted nuts mid palate with a slightly bitter finish that balances a medium sweet over-all character. Nice alcohol warmth and a smooth mouth feel. The alcohol was not over powering at alI. I tasted this on the heals of an especially sweet 09 Dark Lord and was very pleased with its relative bitterness. I’m a little surprised at the reviews I am reading because they don’t seem to match the beer I was drinking - maybe the time in the cellar was just what this one needed. ChrisThomson (380), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 7, 2009 Bottle. Pours black with low head. Aroma and taste is highly alcoholic. Lots of coffee and dark chocolate, licorice and notes of spice. Overall quite sour. Kestral (191), Oslo, Norway Nov 7, 2009 Pours dark, dark brown, settles black in the glass with a tan ring of head. Aroma is quite alcoholic. Notes are of vanilla, roasted malts, and some coffe. Flavour is quite bitter. Ground coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruits, plum and raisins, vanilla, liquorice, with a solid alcohol sting, and surprisingly enough, woody, earthy, dusty notes. This is just a massive, overpowering drink. Complex, but not really at all that pleasant. Carbonation is just barely there. It’s quite obviously not an easy drinker, spent quite a lot of time on only half the bottle.
patrickfannon (273), Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 4, 2009 Bottle. 12 oz. Pours deep, dark hazy brown with no head and no lacing. Aroma of chocolate, fig, barley, malt, yeast, and hints of coffee and pepper. Extremely full boided with a crazily warm moutfeel. Powerful finish. Very little traces of alcohol; hidden nicely beneath the complex aroma and flavor. Excellent stout from Dogfish Head. Agaguk (119), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Nov 4, 2009 Pours a thick black body and a thick brown creamy head. Aroma: corn syrup, green herbs, rhubarb, chocolat, coffee, kalua, tiamaria. Flavor: Alcohol, light burnt malts, porto, cigar, licorice, Grand Marnier. Palate: Full body, soft carbonation, oily, creamy and an after taste of cigar. jbender (17), Hatboro, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 2, 2009 12 oz bottle bottled on 11/14/08: Roasted aroma along with raisins and alcohol. Appearance is a thick black beer with a quickly disappearing head. Sweet taste with roasted coffee/chocolate malt background. Can still taste alcohol, but not all 18% of it. Warms the throat and body after a few sips. Heavy, viscous body. A great beer to sip on in the winter.
