ChazyRPh (571), Chazy, New York, USA Aug 31, 2003 Black and with minimal to no head, this beer pours ominously. I am kind of fearful of the alcohol content...but at 23% ABV, it is certainly drinkable. Make no mistake, the alcohol is very present, but it does not linger (at least in your mouth). I smell red wine, fermented fruit, and some sweet tones. Alcohol does dominate initially, then it finishes nicely with definate maltiness, and even some chocolate. Very sweet finish. I think this will be very drinkable for the alcohol content. DYCSoccer17 (2187), Davis, California, USA Aug 31, 2003 Pours a really viscous black color--almost like motor oil. There is a small 1cm brown head which dissipates into some mild lace. The aroma of this beer is almost fruity, although I think it may be the ethanol that I smell. There also may be some sweet chocoalte hints in the aroma. The start is sweet, followed by some buring of alcohol, which then goes away and the sweetness comes back to end with a nutty chocolate flavor. The alcohol is present throughout, but surprisingly is not overbearing at all. I have read how the alcohol is too much in this beer, but I must say that it is hidden very well and not overbearing. Worht the $9 I paid. I split half a bottle with my brother. The 2002 vintage Sierra Nevada Bigfoot I had yesterday seemed much stronger than this redlem (1155), Illinois, USA Aug 22, 2003 Very brown black with a small tan head, slight lacing. Aroma is full, reminded me of their Raison with a vinous quality to it. A thick black licorice taste, oily, alcohol apparent but not overwhelming. Lingering finish. A sweet caramel aftertaste that coats the lips and tongue. A little too strong and sweet, licorice, for me. duff (5474), Surrey, Greater London, England Aug 20, 2003 Very thick, rich and sweet, with a fair bit of alcohol warmth. Very sweet palate- choclate, vanilla, some dark fruit, coco. A lot of alcohol in the finish, and too sweet for me. Out of this and the 18% version, i'd take the 18%, its a bit more balanced and softer, with less alcohol noticable. (Bottle GBBF 03') MAP (1085), Lakewood, Ohio, USA Aug 20, 2003 Updated: Mar 14, 2004Well, who would have thought it has the smell of alcohol, and lots of it. Barley and some hints of chocolate and roast are far in the back seat however. It looked black and had no head. My first reaction to the flavor was: holy shit. It gave me a lasting feel of sweetnes in my mouth, but still had a slight sting of the 23%. The alcohol was just lingering there in it. The stout characteristics of this are nice, but it does indeed get to you in time. The finishing bite from it does kind of smack you around, and I like that. I am very impressed at how the alcohol in this is not as gouging as I expected, but still evident after each sip..... SJP (483), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 20, 2003 Looks nice and black with almost no head, aroma of alcohol (surprise!) and port wine. Can't taste the alcohol very much at all. Can taste a lot of roasted barley and some thick chocolate as well as hints of coffee and fruit. Palate is a bit thick and slightly oily crkluz (1), Chicago, Illinois, USA does not count Aug 19, 2003 This was a great Imperial. Little head, as to be expected. Darker than pitch. Little aroma, though, besides alcohol. Pleasantly sweet, very fruity (defintely raison, prune). Surprisingly lighter mouth than expected. I really liked that it wasn't overly hopped and the sweetness was let loose. Alcohol all over this one. Beloved Beer (278), California, USA Aug 11, 2003 Worth a try. A bit much for my palate though. Very heavy. But alcohol content is well hidden although evident after finishing the bottle. Not for the first timer and I wouldn't recommend making it your 3rd or 4th beer of the night. I didn't quite grasp the 23% thing and payed for it.
