DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Nov 21, 2006 Clear dark brown body. Boozy raisin juice aroma with sweet torte cake in the background. The flavor has a nice chocolaty/cake base with brandy fruit on top. Fortunately the alcohol that dominates the aroma isn’t as apparent in the flavor. beastiefan2k (1590), Lawrence (formely NYC), Kansas, USA Aug 19, 2006 "my whole face is death" "it smells like death" Just some quotes from my buddies. Bottle thanks to acertain. Split three ways into big snifter. POurs with no visible carbonation, no head wither, Color is blood infused black. Not clarity at all. Of course the aroma is very strong. Still dominated by alcohol. Not as strong as Utopias but still damn strong. Understandable. Outside the alcohol there is chocolate and lts of cherry. Rummy as well. Taste is choclate mixed with run and a hint of cherry. Some roastiness and licorice. Still very strong and very hot. Mouthfeel is very silky and nice. Still ageable and worth trying. lordeche (397), Quincy, Massachusetts, USA Aug 3, 2006 Pours unusually thin for an imperial stout. Extremely winey nose with hints of coffee and raisin. Flavor is quite complex; distinctively sweet with very little roastiness and a strong alcohol back. A bit thin and oily, but surprisingly drinkable. PilsnerPeter (2585), Flushing, New York, USA Jul 13, 2006 Updated: Aug 22, 2006Jet, oily black, no head. Boring appearance. Aroma is overwhelmingly alcohol, burnt chocolate liquer. Flavor is very complex, thick, peppery molassis like body. Chocolate syrup like charcter with a suggestion of sweet raisins, and sweet espresso, toasted caramel. Upfront it’s warm and roasted, however it finishes smooth and sweet. Afterward you lick your lips and there’s a sweet residue left on them. rudolf (1734), Buffalo, New York, USA Jul 10, 2006 Bottle from Kramer. Black with absolutely no head. Nose is predominantely raisin, some caramel, brown sugar, molasses, port, chocolate, coffee. Alcohol burns the nose a bit, port up front, loads of honey and raisin. Alcohol burn takes the front but then gives way to cocoa, honey, raisin and crazy malt finish. One dimensional compared to the ’03. Perfect level of carbonation. Becomes much more alcoholic as it warms - too much honestly. I wouldn’t want another 12oz The problem here is really the packaging. I could deal with a 6 oz bottle.. 12 is oppressive Slinger (91), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Jun 29, 2006 12 oz bottle- Pours very dark with little or no head. Srong sweet smell of syrup, berries and scent of alcohol. The alcohol is present but hidden by sweetness and flavors of raisons. Coats the glass like a fine brandy. Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA May 13, 2006 I’m so stoked ot have a chance to try this rare bottle. Carmelly black with just a small skiff of brown bubbles that quickly retreat. Bourbony bread pudding, a bit of smokey coffee, chocolate cake. Raisins, prunes, brown sugar. Wow. So sweet. Really small, barely lip-wetting sips are required to keep it from feeling utterly syrupy. There is a lot of alcohol too, but the sweetness masks it and makes it a secondary flavor. Palate is thick and sticky. This is a fascinating test of the highest reaches of beer strength, but it is also not much like beer. Much more port-like than beer-like. Actually, much more chocolate cake-like than beer-like. The sweetness slaps my head, makes my skin tingle. I am just a couple ounces into the bottle Alaskanwarren very generously split with me, and my palate feels beat. alaskanwarren (286), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 13, 2006 Wow. This beer really captivates you. IT’s so dark, laces the glass so thick. The dark head dissipates quickly. Aroma is so strong. Smells thick. It also smells really rich. Dark cholate, syrup, molasses, hints of ripe fruit. Smells like oily black coffee. ... First taste.... wow! This is strong, rich stuff. It is so thick. So, sweet. So rich. Like a big bite of dark chocolate cake. On further inspection, I noticed some of the roastiness, but as it’s so sweet, it’s hard to say that it feels like a roasty beer. It does have bitterness, much through the alcohol, for sure. It feels a bit like a port wine. The aftertaste bites in the back of the throat, Feels cloying and sweet. This tastes almost more like a liqueur than a beer. It’s so fun, so ballsy to make, so unique, but I have no idea what to do with it. I really really like tasting it but it’s just this one experience. I can’t think of it as a beer the same way I think of beer that I drink recreationally. Good exciting work from Dogfish head here. What a wild beast.
