Drank this a cellar temperature. There was a pretty strong aroma of alcohol. It taste like combination of alcohol, malt and coffee. I"m not sure I"d call it beer, strong stuff to be sure.

My first American perfect 5. I agree with Wakie that it is perhaps too intense. I found that a single 12 ounce bottle is meant to be shared with two or three friends, but not drunk by one person at one sitting. Is this beer or hoppy Kaluha? Screams of coffee, choclate, sweet dark roasted malt, kinds of hums about hops, and then slams you with a serious alcohol burn. The alcohol is probably necessary. I bet that it would not be possible to get such complex aromas and flavors to dissolve in a regular beer. I wonder how they kept the yeast from dying? Appearance is jet black, no more head than on a glass of Kaluha, sweet and syrupy thick, with more and more going on the longer it sits on your tongue. Of course if you try to drink the whole bottle you miss all this wonderful activity and end up giving the beer a lower score because it is, indeed, too hard to drink. The only thing you get out of the second half of the bottle is the remaining 333.3 calories. And enough alcohol to have a one-beer hangover.

Very black in color with no head whatsoever. Sweet aroma of dark fruits, alcohol and soy sauce. Sweet roasted malt flavor with hints of port wine, raisins. Alcohol definitely makes itself known, but still doesn’t seem like 23%. Very rich, thick mouthfeel, but not cloying. I first tried this around 18 months ago. It may have mellowed a tiny bit, but I’m looking forward to trying this in a few years.

Bananas, hints of vanilla, vinous nose. Midnight black colour. Tan head. All sweet, chocolate, plum, black cherry, terribly warming, alcohol is definately evident, but this is terribly drinkable for the weight. Full bodied, velvety soft mouthfeel, smooth and sweet, light bitterness tries to push through in the long lingering alcohol laced finish. AN incredible brew from Sam and the guys at Dogfish, HOT DAMN.

2002 bottle (Vim and Vigor crossed out) courtesy of 2277jf poured into a snifter. Pours dark, dark brown, almost black, with hints of mahogany around the edges. There is a bubble tan head that recedes immediately to nothing and leaves no lacing. The aroma is massively sweet with lots of dark malts and a ton of booze that burns the nose slightly. There is also some sweet dark chocolate, but the aroma is close to that of a liquor with the dominant sweetness and alcohol. The taste follows the aroma and is mainly a big dark roasted malt aroma with dark fruits and chocolate on top. Big and sweet overall, but the finish is something to behold with a burning in the mouth that feels like I’m sipping on whiskey. The mouthfeel is very slick, sticky sweet with little carbonation and, obviously, very boozy. This is the definition of a sipper. It’s got lots of flavor with malts, chocolate and dark fruits all present. However, the massive sweetness and alcohol presence make this one tough to get through with any speed.

Sampled at the Yeha. Poured black with a light brown head. Aroma of cherries, chocolate and strong alcohol. Taste is very strong and sweet... chocolate, cherries, tons of alcohol. Burns going down. Unbalanced, but nice as only DFH can.

Very brown black with a small tan head, slight lacing. Aroma is full, reminded me of their Raison with a vinous quality to it. A thick black licorice taste, oily, alcohol apparent but not overwhelming. Lingering finish. A sweet caramel aftertaste that coats the lips and tongue. A little too strong and sweet, licorice, for me.
