Has a deep dark hue with a small brown head. Smooth chocolate malt nose with roasted coffee, toffee and hints of date and prune. Rich full bodied feel with most of the flavours following from the nose. Coffee, chocolate and a long lingering roasted malt finish. Slighly sweet. This is a fabulous beer that smells, tastes and looks great. The best thing is that despite its great alcoholic strength the flavour does not really suffer for it and it could just as well be a very normal 5-9% imperial stout. These guys truely know how to make a great beer and I hope to sample more like this. The only down point is the price, £6.99 for the 35.5cl bottle. I have bought a couple to age and will report my findings from these in a couple of years time. dirkules (613), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

The first couple of sips are the worst, and I still have an aftertaste of the beer even after the st. bernardus! Wow! Insane. Wakie (612), Centreville, Virginia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 12/20 | Dec 4, 2002 Ok, so this might be weird that it scored high everywhere but overall. But it was just too intense. Dark and syrupy with a lovely lightly fruity aroma. Absolutely no head. The taste though was molasses I believe. Like the syrup of Coca-Cola not mixed with carbonated water. Sweeter than sweet. Could stand to be cut with something .... not sure what but definitely needed to be cut. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 14, 2004 Black with a biege head. Aroma is sweet and roasted with lots of alcohol. Dark fruits, chocolate, and alcohol on the tongue. Not as good as the 18% but it's still pretty damn good. jskendzel (602), Washington DC, USA
| 1.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 2/10 | 1/5 | 2/20 | Jan 5, 2003 Thick and virtually no head when this pours. I can smell the aroma without even coming close to the glass. I saved this for a New Year’s treat but it almost ruined my night--THIS IS NOT BEER! I did not buy a port. Vinous and strong. Hops? Malt? All I taste is sugar fermented with champagne yeast and sold for too high price. Dark Lord kicks this beer’s ass. I had a little stuffy nose before drinking but now it is gone. Alcohol way too overwhelming. Although there is some fruit in the finish, alcohol dominates and doesnt allow for other flavors to come through. I will have to take two Prevacid tonight to combat the alcholic domination in this beer...if I can call it beer...nice try, but don’t rate this one high just because others do. Yuk. A lot of alcohol does not make up for a lack of interesting flavor. railcat1 (582), Orlando, Florida, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 31, 2003 Black and with minimal to no head, this beer pours ominously. I am kind of fearful of the alcohol content...but at 23% ABV, it is certainly drinkable. Make no mistake, the alcohol is very present, but it does not linger (at least in your mouth). I smell red wine, fermented fruit, and some sweet tones. Alcohol does dominate initially, then it finishes nicely with definate maltiness, and even some chocolate. Very sweet finish. I think this will be very drinkable for the alcohol content.
