Well I must admit for the ten dollars I paid for a 12 ounce bottle of this I was not impressed. Yes it is strong and it does have it good qualities but it would not be a repurchase at half the price. The aroma of this beer was strong and seemed to be a mixture of malt and soy sauce. I was somewhat tatken back by this and asked another to smell this as well. Their take was soy sauce or Woosteshire. Hmmmmm first beer to be described that way. All in all thought the aromas was big and not unplesant. The color was black with little to no head. Flavor was very sweet (whcih I find somewhat objectionalble) but complex. The beer was like drinking a port wine. As such if this is used as an after dinner drink in small quantities it would be ok. I did not thing this was partriculary balanced as little hopps made their presense known. An interesting beer but flawed.

If this permanetly replaces the 18% version im going to be upset. It’s just too much. The alcohol in the nose is the first hint of what is to come. Very sweet flavor with a strong alcohol prescence. Hints of rum raisin and dark fruit. However, the alcohol overwhelms and upsets the balance of the beer. Not bad, but i liked the 18% better.

Color is a little lighter than the 18% (brown, but I can see throught the glass). An off white cola like head. Very port-like in aroma. Lots of preserved fruit, "jammy" aromas and ALCOHOL. Faint notes of chocolate and roast with a bit more rum and vanilla. Concord grape, blackberry jam, and alcohol dominated the scene. The alcohol sneaks up on you, right when you are about to pin down an aroma, it will come through and erase whatever was on your palate (big bully aroma). Very sweet with another amazingly full body (not quite as smooth as the 18%). The beer right now is dominated by alcohol, which is screaming above all the other flavors who are talking in their 6-inch voices. Aging will do this beer wonders I think. Still good stuff though.

I did not like this beer. The aroma was forwardly alcohol, with malt and complex roasted flavors. Residual sugar was too high for my taste, I found it very cloying.

Whoa!! this is definately NOT what I was expecting. I was looking for an Expedition Stout on steroids and all I got was a black glass of port wine and blackberry. Where are the roasted flavors associated with Imperial Stouts? I can sense the malts but cannot taste any hops. IMO this is a nice beer but not what I would call an Imperial Stout.

Poured a dark brown, with a small tan head that quickly receded. An interesting beer, very different from the norm. aroma was of roasted malt with a hint of alcohol. Taste was very similar to a port, hints of chocolate, plums, with a sweet sticky like finish, alcohol is well hidden, except for a pleasant sweet burn down the throat. Not an everyday beer, but an interesting and welcome treat. i look forward to see how my other bottles age over the next 2-3 years.

Bottle courtesy of Tim. Thanks! Shared with the CU Beer Club at the 1/1 Radio Maria tasting. Wow this was amazing. Notes of bacon fat and oak on the nose lead into rich and heavenly palate. This hides its alcohol amazingly.I would have guessed 10-12% at most. Impressive chocolate meets kahlua meets smoke and oak. One of the best beers of 2006.
