Starts off with a slight filmy head when it is chilled but vanishes quickly as it warms. Flavors change as the temp changed. I agree that this gets harder and harder to drink as it warms because the alcohol in the taste gets stronger, but more flavors appear after time. Syrupy molases, sugar, dates, rum, brown sugar- anything rediculously sweet si what this beer reminds me of. I think the sweetness and the alcohol blocks any hops that were added. After about 2/3 of a bottle i can feel it sitting very warmly in my stomach, as if I had just taken a couple shots of rum. It has a nice carbonation which lasts the entire time, however a longer lasting head would have ben neat. OK- it has been over an hour and i am almost 3/4 of the way done and although it is really good, I am not sure if i can finish it. Leaves a warm slightly burning sensationon my lips after each sip. Overall the alcohol is hidden quite well for such an extravagant beer, and I would have expected to notice more alcohol than I did, which is not to say it isnt apparent becuase it is- but Dogfish Head did a really nice job with this one. I like very exotic and experimental beers- and maybe next years version will be even stronger?- not sure if that is possible though. Excellent! BeerandBlues2 (3216), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA

Perfumey, fragrant floral hop aroma, dark fruit (raisin, prune, plum), oak, caramel malt (roasted, meal, cookie), sugary and alcohol notes. Flavor is moderately sweet, medium acidity that is drying, caramel and toffee roasted malt, chocolate and coffee notes, alcohol burn. Dark and full bodied, warm, dry and yet smooth. You must sip this beer. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA

Malts and fruits cannot hide the 23% ABV. This stuff is the mother of most Imperial Stouts. hotstuff (3175), Indiana, USA

The alcohol is definitely a little over the top, but this is very good nonetheless as I like high ABV beers. It poured a small sized tan head with fine sized bubbles that fully diminished. The body was opaque and uncarbonated with a black hue. The nose was chocolate and pure alcohol. The flavor was warming and lots of alcohol. The mouthfeel was tingly and had a burning sensation in the throat, but oh so yummy! The lacing was fair. Well worth the try despite the strong alcohol presence. No head to speak of. Not very carbonated. Initial odor is of strong alcohol notes but some sweetness like cotton candy or dark chocolate. There is a slight alcohol burning in the mouthfeel. The finish is silky smooth but ends slightly dry and with an alcohol kick. Can't wait to get this again! HIGHLY recommended! ***Rerate-Just had this again tonight. This is one powerful brew. Strong sugary/alcohol taste. Stiff alcohol notes abound in the aroma. Wonderfully crafted beer. Highly recommended to all. rauchbier (3000), Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, England
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 10, 2003 Bottled. Another shared bottle with the "Coallition Of The Swilling" At GBBF2003- 2 Americans (Nuffield and Beer Limey), 2 Australians (Duff and Spiesy) and 2 Brits (SilkTork and me), sampling weapons of mass destruction like WWS. Jet black, no head and minimal condition. packed with fruit, licorice and roastbarley, but far too strong and sweet for my taste. The alcohol numbs the senses, I think you realy need a long time to age and try this beer before it reveals any true greatness.

Can best be described as a very fine Tennessee sipping molasses. A trace of soy. I can imagine that this was the goal of Sam Adams Triple Bock. Preferred the lower ABV. ante (2942), Stockholm, Sweden
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 17, 2004 Black, no foam. Big extreme aroma of tar, port, cognac, plums, raisin, paint and whiskey. Thick and warming flavour of raisin, cognac, espresso and plums. Long oily aftertaste of espresso, port and whiskey. Extreme. Prefer the 2003 version, though.
