Very rich and flavorful. A very, very, very well made beer. I rated the 18% much lower than this. This is very close to being a perfect beer. biznizness (956), Mooresville, North Carolina, USA

The 2003 was almost too strong for me, but this was better. The initial flavor is a little rough but the finish is sweet and delish. Tremendous. BTW, I am drinking this in Jan 06. I’d love to find a place that has this on tap for my next birthday. Volgon (2490), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 19, 2002 Pours an almost black color, with very little head. Sweet chocolate aroma, with a bit of toffee, and some alcohol. Sweet date cookie taste and goes down smooth. Really smooth. Ends sweet, Not as enjoyable as the 18% version but that may change with a decade or two of aging. VA Homebrewer (525), Portsmouth, Virginia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 15, 2002 2002: Wonderful beer at the higher strength. Definitely reminiscent of congac or port - fairly sweet and fruity with a defined but not offensive alcohol aroma and flavor. Vinious with a slightly detracting grainy flavor, not cloying. Dark fruit presence includes prunes, raisins and dates. Ruby-black color with very minimal brown head. This is sippin’ beer and well worth the dough. jayme9874 (756), Hamburg, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Dec 28, 2002 Updated: Sep 9, 2003Almost completly black with red/brown edges, no head at all except for traces of bubbles around edge of glass. Huge aroma of sweet crystal malt, maple syrup, grain, port, alcohol, burnt sugar, chocolate, caramel and others. Medium to thick bodied, stiff, very sweet, deep dark currants/prunes, molasses, burnt and sweet sugar, warming alcohol with a nice burn which subsides as you drink it.(so does the heartburn:) This is fucking incredible. Its alot different then the 18% so why bother comparing? Man, what a pleasure to sip and savor. Alcohol is there but not a sore thumb, hard to believe this is 23% but my head believes it after only 4 ounces. Whewwww...A drinking experience that should not be passed by any beer fan with an openmind. Its sweet and strong for sure but a lot of little complexities going on as it warms and your palate adjusts. As a sidenote, shared a bottle with a few friends and their parents, many compared to a fine port or sherry. I wonder what this would be like in 10 years because no way I have restraint to hang on to it:) But im goin got try for a couple years. DFH rocks! | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 16, 2008 Bottle at Akkurat, Stockholm Beer Festival 2007, after festival RB night; huge thanks to oh6gdx Black and brown color, no head, tears on the glass. Alcoholic aroma, some phenol, mature caramel, tobacco. The liquid flows like lava in my mouth, wrapping the tastebuds like a superfluid, with its sweet concoction of caramel malt, delicate chocolate malt, raisins. The final is shorter than expected (the age?). A monster.
