Aroma of alcohol, sawdust, and molasses and a bit of chocolate. Flavor is bourbon-like. Some strong alcohol flavor, behind that notes of chocolate, grapes, prunes, a little vanilla.. The flavor is quite complex, but the finish is straight up alcoholic. This is powerful stuff. On the palate this is very smooth except for that alcohol burn that comes at the back. Sticky thick and a real sipper... Anything more would put you on your back in a hurry.. Very unique.. webjedi (249), Silver Spring, Maryland, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 4, 2006 I had this after a sampler and dinner at the Dogfish Alehouse in Gaithersburg, MD. I had this as a "desert" beer to accompany the chocolate cake. Wow, what a pairing. It was really, really, strong, almost port like, no head as described by others, but the last pour, I was able to coax a few bubbles (and made note of that thing to the wife). With such a strong hit of the alcohol content, I was expecting a heavier hit to the body, but I think I would have been better if I had it as the sole beer for the evening. As of 2/4/2005, based on the bottle pic to the left here, they are still serving 2002 in 2006... a four year old! MikeMac (185), Wyandotte, Michigan, USA

Aroma was almost like a reposado tequila slightly smokey Backed up by molassses and roast malt. Flavor was suprisingly creamy with an alcohol burn at the end. Hot Hot Hot. Hints of molasses, chocolate light licorice and rasin. Quite impressive. Miksu (2241), Jyväskylä, Finland

Sweet aroma with burnt sugar, vanilla, port wine, soya sauce, quite boozy. Very sweet and sugary flavor with chocolate, port wine as well as both warming and sharp alcohols. I prefer the 18 % version, which is less sugary and boozy. tytoanderso (1387), St. Louis Park, Minnesota, USA

Thought it apt to share with the Chicago crew as they treated me so well. Initially the nose is quite hot. The massive 23% does diminish as the beer opens, however. Along with the alcohol, a touch of chocolate and vanilla as well. Pours near pitch black with no head. Virtually lifeless. Flavor has plenty of alcohol (as expected) but lots of chocolate, maple syrup, pour and nutty sherry. Fairly sweet. Thick and chewy mouthfeel. Minimal carbonation with a sweet, boozy finish. fidel (1018), Livermore, California, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 11, 2004 Oil Black. Roasted, chocolaty aroma. Considering the syrupy nature of this brew, its sweetness is not overwhelming. Of course, at 23% the alcohol is noticeable both aroma and flavor, but not distracting for the most part. Sweetness greater than roastedness in the flavor. The thickness of this brew seems to leave it with more of a "flat" palate, but the carbonation is present and adds to the flavor, but is muted by the thickness. The paramount of sipping beers. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 21, 2002 If this permanetly replaces the 18% version im going to be upset. It’s just too much. The alcohol in the nose is the first hint of what is to come. Very sweet flavor with a strong alcohol prescence. Hints of rum raisin and dark fruit. However, the alcohol overwhelms and upsets the balance of the beer. Not bad, but i liked the 18% better.
