| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 21, 2002 Strong aroma of alcohol. A totally different beer than the 18%, in style and taste. In my opinion, a bit too much. Flavor is sharp fruit, somewhat port/brandy. Very complex, but alcohol is not balanced nearly as well as the 18% version. Not any chocolate flavor. Not a bad beer by any means...but slightly disappointing and too much to handle. Straddling the line of what should ever be brewed as beer. MikeF (528), Cleveland, Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 11, 2004 Oil Black. Roasted, chocolaty aroma. Considering the syrupy nature of this brew, its sweetness is not overwhelming. Of course, at 23% the alcohol is noticeable both aroma and flavor, but not distracting for the most part. Sweetness greater than roastedness in the flavor. The thickness of this brew seems to leave it with more of a "flat" palate, but the carbonation is present and adds to the flavor, but is muted by the thickness. The paramount of sipping beers. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 21, 2002 If this permanetly replaces the 18% version im going to be upset. It’s just too much. The alcohol in the nose is the first hint of what is to come. Very sweet flavor with a strong alcohol prescence. Hints of rum raisin and dark fruit. However, the alcohol overwhelms and upsets the balance of the beer. Not bad, but i liked the 18% better. radiomgb (2068), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 19, 2003 Deep black in colour. Aroma is very sweet, of alcohol and extreme amounts of malt. Flavour is very, very sweet, malty, lots of chocolate, small amounts of coffee. Finishes very sweet with lots of alcohol. Not quite as balanced as the 18% but still very well made for such a huge beer. Thanks ciderguy. Rockinout (946), Kent, Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 17, 2003 Very dark, no head, thick. Anise, raisin, molasses. Huge mouthfeel, sweet towards the finish, almost too sweet. My wife was supposed to help me with this, she backed out. Messed me up! I'm glad I have a few more of these. dominion (78), charlotte, North Carolina, USA

This is one to be savored and never forgotten. 23.04% and you can feel every bit of it aaronh (201), McMurray, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 30, 2003 This pitch black beer exits the bottle in almost a syrupy manner and exhibits virtually no head. The thin ring of dark tan foam clings to the outer rim of the glass. The aroma is alcohol, malts and fruit, topped of with a bit of hops and some more alcohol. The taste is very sweet and thick. Alcohol notes are prominent, along with sweet fruits like grape and plum. It is essentially like a sweet ruby port with a shot of bourbon in it. Since I like each almost as much as I like beer, this is a dream beer to me. The sweet wine notes linger around seemingly forever in the aftertatse, like a good chocolate truffle. I'll have to consider buying a couple more bottles to age. The mouthfeel is thick and luxurious as it coats the tongue. The drinakbility is good considering the ABV of the beer. dhurtubise (568), Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 12, 2003 Dogfish head's world wide stout is a strange drink. Although I found it thoroughly pleasant, I am not sure if it I would have suspected this concoction to be a beer. It is black as night with no head or carbonation. It smells of alcohol and black currants. It's got a huge black-currant like flavour intertwined with roast and a massive amount of sweetness. It lingers for a long time on the palate and is very viscous and heat from the alcohol BIG! Overall it reminds me more of a liqueur than a beer.
