Although I found it thoroughly pleasant, I am not sure if it I would have suspected this concoction to be a beer. It is black as night with no head or carbonation. It smells of alcohol and black currants. It's got a huge black-currant like flavour intertwined with roast and a massive amount of sweetness. It lingers for a long time on the palate and is very viscous and heat from the alcohol BIG! Overall it reminds me more of a liqueur than a beer. mixamatt (427), San Francisco, California, USA

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 25, 2003 Deep brown color. Big alcohol aroma. Only the slightest head. Some fruitiness. Sweet flavor. Very port-like. Alcohol warming. Tingles the tongue. Medium body. Impressive to get this sort of strength solely from fermentation. I'm not floored, but it's interesting as a novelty. I can't imagine drinking a whole bottle. Far, far better than Sam Adams Triple Bock. Thanks user_ex! MaxPower (961), St. Louis, Missouri, USA

If you like alcohol, go to town with this thing. It'll knock your socks off. The alcohol flavor is overpowering, making the beer more one dimensional than the 18% version. This isn't a bad thing, but it does put you under. Having water close at hand when drinking this may not be a bad call. austinpowers (2828), New York, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Dec 25, 2002 Updated: Jul 16, 2003Holy smokes. They've done it again. I thought the 18% WWS couldn't be beat, but this brew almost did it. The only way you can tell the 18% from the 23% beer is that on the 23% label, the words "vim and vigor" are crossed through with a black marker. Weird. It's like they had additional labels from last year's batch and had to use 'em up. Anyway, the alcohol is incredibly well-hidden. The 23% has a very slight head, while the 18% beer was totally still. Like a fine port wine.
