Ernest (4229), Boulder, Colorado, USA Apr 8, 2004 2003 bottle (obtained from ScottVacula via jcalabre). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is absolutely opaque black. Aroma is heavily malty (molasses, chocolate, caramel, roasted grain), with
notes of maple/pancake syrup, vanilla, raisin, prune, licorice, and alcohol, hints of smoke. Flavor is heavily
sweet, lightly acidic. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy
texture, soft carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Not too surprisingly, this is somewhere between the 18.8 and
23 percents...not as pancake-syrupy and un-beer-like as the 23, but not as velvety and elegant as the 18.8.
Since the bottle is identical to the 18.8 in every way, it was a concern that this might really be the 18.8, but I've
sampled the 18.8 three times now (love it), and this is certainly a different beer.
Hophead22 (169), Redlands, California, USA Jul 10, 2008 Wow, this is good. Dark fruits are all over the place in this one. Super dark, super flavor. The dog, again, liked ths one. Not overwhelming in the least. wetherel (1012), Carlsbad, California, USA May 25, 2008 Tried from bottle with Atlanta ratebeer crew at 5 Seasons North tasting. Lots of smokey oxidation of the good kind (no cardboard). Sweet malty. Caramel and molasses flavors abound. Dark color (of course). Mellowed and easy to drink. Delicious. Cocacola like aroma notes. The best WWS I’ve ever had. Excellent. kp (6200), Woodstock, Georgia, USA May 25, 2008 Date: 05/22/2008
